It's extremely rare to see two top 10 players locking horns in the second round of any tournament, but that's what's in store at the Japan Open here - and that's due to Fils forgetting to sign up before the entry deadline, with the Frenchman forced to come through qualifying.

Fils won his two qualifying matches and proceeded to demolish countryman Luca Van Assche for the loss of just five games to set up this encounter with Tiafoe, who ended the career of Japanese superstar Kei Nishikori in his opening round.

It should be another entertaining contest full of outrageous shotmaking between two of the most electrifying players in the sport.

But for me, Fils is the superior and more all-round player. Tiafoe has improved his consistency and has to be respected, but Fils is an immense talent and it's incredible that he's ranked in the top 10 given he's been injured for five of the last 12 months.

So this should be a competitive contest, but Fils is the deserved favourite - backing Over 20.5 games and smaller stake on another deciding set between the pair.

It's been a career-best season for Tiafoe.

Previously, the American's best number of match wins was 39 back in 2023, but he's already eclipsed that mark in 2026 with 43 - and he could reach a half-century of victories if he maintains his current level.

Consistency has been Tiafoe's biggest area of improvement - he's gone 18-1 in his opening round matches and 33-7 against lower-ranked opponents.

After capturing the ATP 500 title in Halle on grass, Tiafoe had another spectacular summer at home, reaching the Cincinnati Masters final (where he lost to Fils) before another electrifying run to the US Open semi-finals, where he was edged out by Ben Shelton.

Tiafoe is a former Japan Open runner-up (2022) and he broke a streak of three first round exits in Tokyo with his 6-4 6-4 win over Nishikori in his opening round, ending the career of the Japanese.

It's been a stellar season for Fils after injury problems.

The Frenchman has won 33 of his 44 matches, including winning the ATP 500 title in Barcelona and picking up his maiden Masters 1000 title in Cincinnati.

Fils has been remarkably consistent, also making the final of Doha, semi-finals in Miami and Madrid and quarter-finals in Canada.

However, the 22-year-old is still yet to go beyond the R16 at Grand Slam level, suffering a hugely disappointing first round loss at the US Open to Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Fils still made his top 10 debut, but had to go through qualifying in Tokyo - picking up an extra 25 ranking points in the process before easing past compatriot Van Assche 6-2 6-3 in his opener.
