Alexander Zverev continues his pursuit of a third Madrid Masters title when he confronts rising star Jakub Mensik in the fourth round on Tuesday night.

Zverev has an outstanding 27-6 record in Madrid, with only the Big Four winning more matches in the tournament's history. The German has collected two titles in the Spanish capital and will be hoping to play for another over the coming week.

Meanwhile, Mensik appears to have fully recovered from his most recent injury and will be looking to continue his brilliant record against top five players, which currently stands at a positive 4-2.

However, Mensik has never faced a top five player on clay or Zverev at all for that matter. I think Zverev has just enough firepower in these conditions to get the job done here. His serve always works well in the slight Madrid altitude, while he's got a phenomenal recent record on clay against players outside the top 25.

Mensik most certainly has the ability to keep this tight and perhaps even knick a set, but Zverev has got to be considered favourite.

It's really just been more of the same for Zverev so far in 2026 - but this relative mediocrity is still superior to mostly everyone else on tour except for Sinner, Alcaraz and Djokovic.

Zverev has made the semi-finals of all the biggest tournaments at the Australian Open, Indian Wells, Miami and Monte Carlo.

On all four occasions, Zverev was eliminated by either Alcaraz or Sinner, with the latter knocking him out of all three Masters 1000 events in Indian Wells, Miami and Monte Carlo.

The German was searching for his first title of the season in Munich a couple of weeks ago, but was upstaged - was again at the semi-final stage - by an inspired Flavio Cobolli.

Returning to Madrid, where he has an excellent record, Zverev has reached the R16 for the ninth straight occasion, beating Mariano Navone in three and Terance Atmane in straights.

Mensik has played some great tennis this year, but he's dropped out of the top 25 due to a couple of injury problems and his Miami Masters winner points coming off his ranking.

The Czech started the year with a bang, winning the title in Auckland and reaching the R16 at the Australian Open - but he was forced to withdraw due to injury.

The 20-year-old returned to action in Doha and made an immediate statement, stunning Jannik Sinner on his way to the semi-finals.

However, after going down in a deciding set tiebreak in the third round of his Miami title defence to Frances Tiafoe, Mensik missed the start of the clay swing due to more injury issues.

Returning to court in Madrid, Mensik is hoping to repeat his quarter-final showing from last year after taking care of Martin Damm and Karen Khachanov in straight sets.
