Bendigo Tips August 12

McDonald Electrical Maiden Plate Tips (Race 4)

Bendigo Favourite - Race 4 No. 1 Diamond Eye

It has been a good start to the new season for promising young trainer Reece Goodwin, with four August winners already recorded, including a treble at Pakenham on Monday.

Goodwin prepares Diamond Eye, a mare who has been building towards a breakthrough victory in her second campaign, which opened with an eye-catching third at a big price when resuming at Sale on June 28.

She then tackled a metropolitan maiden over 1200m at Sandown Lakeside, recording the second-fastest final 200m of the July 8 meeting in a race won by the talented Here's Matilda, who franked the form with a three-length BM64 victory next start.

Diamond Eye simply found one better late when beaten as favourite at Sale last time, with the winner coming from the rear to get there late, while that July 26 maiden also rated favourably against the 1400m BM62 contested later on the card.

Hard fit, proven on Heavy ground and suited by the slight drop back in distance, the five-year-old gets every chance to score a breakthrough at Bendigo on Wednesday.

Bendigo Best Bet - Race 5 No. 6 Royal Rendezvous

Good bets were landed for Royal Rendezvous on debut at Werribee on December 7, where the Mark Walker-trained gelding was backed at a big price before reeling in the handy Set Me Loose.

That runner-up won her next two starts comfortably before finishing fourth as a beaten favourite at Caulfield in June, while Royal Rendezvous backed up his debut victory with a metropolitan fourth at Geelong on January 3.

He recorded the fastest final 200m of that entire meeting when finishing alongside Job Done, an in-form galloper who arrived off back-to-back Caulfield wins before subsequently placing at Group 3 level.

While not disgraced, Royal Rendezvous did not appear to run a strong 1300m at his third start before being narrowly beaten when dropping back to 1200m at Pakenham prior to a spell.

The four-year-old resumes off two winter hit-outs and was far more prominent when winning an 800m Cranbourne jump-out in good time on August 3, with talented young jockey Lachlan Neindorf remaining aboard from that latest workout.

Bendigo Roughie - Race 7 No. 1 Express Class

Although Express Class had to settle for eighth-of-13 when well backed at an each-way price first-up at Caulfield on July 25, the resumption was still a pass mark.

He settled back and was unsuited in an on-speed-favoured race, recording the third-fastest final 400m and 200m of that late-season three-year-old contest.

The son of Exceed And Excel now drops sharply in grade to a country BM66 after spending much of his three-year-old season in Group company following a debut victory in a late-season two-year-old handicap at Sandown last July.

He defeated Ferivia on that occasion, with that rival subsequently winning at Group 3 level and later at Group 2 level over Ole Dancer, who then won the Group 1 Thousand Guineas.

While drawn wide, Express Class generally likes to find his feet and settle back anyway, and if the middle to wider lanes come into play on a rain-affected Bendigo track, he could easily enter calculations late at a big price.

Bendigo Value Bet - Race 8 No. 7 Island Boy

Following an even return at Sale on Heavy ground on July 9, Island Boy improved second-up with a sixth-of-13 finish in a metropolitan BM74 at Sandown on July 22.

The gelding made some inroads over the mile in a race won by Perfect Ten, who franked the form with a Saturday victory at Caulfield Heath last weekend.

Island Boy also finished only a length behind Somewhere in that latest city appearance, with that useful galloper having narrowly missed in a Saturday BM78 at his previous start.

The Julius Sandhu-trained runner now strips fitter with a 1600m run under the belt and drops back nicely in grade to a country BM66, having shown plenty of potential through a long second campaign that included two victories.

Jamie Mott remains aboard after partnering Island Boy for both career wins, and while the wet track is the main query, his only two previous Heavy-track attempts both came first-up and he was far from disgraced in either.
