Ballarat Tips June 30

Best Bet

Race 5 No. 5 Spirited Defence

He ticks ticks plenty of boxes, including an outstanding record on the Ballarat Synthetic, where Spirited Defence has recorded three wins and two runner-up finishes from five starts.

The son of National Defense failed to fire in two turf runs last preparation, although it's worth noting both appearances came away from his preferred surface.

Andrew Noblet's representative has been off the scene since finishing fifth over this trip at Warrnambool at the end of December, but he advertised his wellbeing with a jump-out win at this venue earlier this month.

Barrier three is another positive, giving John Allen every opportunity to secure a favourable run from the outset.

Returning to the Ballarat Synthetic for the first time since scoring over this course and distance in August, Spirited Defence looks well placed to resume with a victory.

Next Best

Race 7 No. 1 Life Sentence

The five-year-old produced several competitive efforts on turf earlier this preparation, including a sixth at this venue on his penultimate start in Benchmark 62 company.

Beaten just over three-and-a-half lengths on that occasion, the Matt Cumani-trained gelding returned to the Ballarat Synthetic two weeks ago and immediately returned to winning form over this course and distance.

The son of Star Witness fought hard to score by just under half a length, with the first two finishing two-and-a-half lengths clear of the third.

The runner-up has since franked the form with another narrow second at this venue last week, adding further merit to the performance.

Despite carrying top weight, Life Sentence drops back in grade and, with Billy Egan aboard, looks capable of completing the double.

Market Mover

Race 2 No. 7 Apache Sunrise

The market has spoken in favour of the experienced filly in the second of three maidens on the card.

Archie Alexander's filly has finished runner-up in both starts at this venue, including when beaten just under one-and-a-half lengths over 1100m here nine days ago.

The daughter of Pierata produced another honest effort on that occasion and has been well supported in betting, firming from $6 into $4.40 with Neds.

Stats Say

The Tony & Calvin McEvoy stable has enjoyed an excellent season on the Ballarat Synthetic, producing a 50% strike rate from 20 runners.

Apprentice Olivia East, who has partnered three winners from five rides for the stable this season, reunites with the once-raced Filigree Shadow in Race 3.

The stable's other runner is Del Lirenza, who chases back-to-back victories after breaking through over this track at her latest start in Race 4.
