Brazil face Japan in one of the most anticipated Round of 32 matches at the 2026 World Cup. Brazil topped Group C, while Japan finished unbeaten in second behind the Netherlands. Japan, with an impressive run of form and past scalps over top European teams, are tipped to push Brazil hard, possibly extending the match into extra time. Brazil’s performances have been solid but unspectacular, relying on star winger Vini Jr. The article recommends backing Japan to avoid defeat in 90 minutes and sees value in an upset. Live streaming details are provided via bet365.

Brazil vs Japan World Cup Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

It's arguably the biggest match of the Round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup as five-time winners Brazil face an impressive Japan side at NRG Stadium in Houston on Monday.

Brazil emerged as winners of Group C after a shaky start against Morocco, cruising past Haiti and Scotland and edging out the AFCON champions to top the group on goal difference, while Japan were also unbeaten across the group stage, but had to settle for second place behind the Netherlands.

It sets up a mouth-watering showdown on Monday, with Japan looking to make history and win a World Cup knockout match for the first time.

There's been several near misses for the Blue Samarai in recent times - they blew a 2-0 lead against Belgium in 2018 and crashed out on penalties in 2010 and 2022.

Having gone unbeaten in 26 of their last 28 internationals, conquered Spain and Germany four years ago and also earning relatively recent wins over England and Brazil, I think Japan can at the very least extend this match into extra-time - and they very well could pull off the upset unless their South American opponents improve.

I thought Brazil were second-best against Morocco, which was their only true test of this World Cup so far. Their qualifying campaign was average and the Selecao seem to be relying on some Carlo Ancelotti magic for this competition.

I'm taking Japan in the Double Chance market and at $3.40 odds to progress. While Brazil haven't been at their best, star winger Vini Jr has been in top form, scoring in every game for four total goals - he can find the back of the net again here.
  • Japan are unbeaten in 26 of their last 28 matches
  • Japan beat Spain & Germany at the 2022 World Cup
  • Japan beat Brazil 3-2 in a friendly last year
  • Brazil drew 1-1 with Morocco in the group stage, who are a similar level to Japan
  • Vini Jr has scored four goals in three games this tournament & has 10 in his last 11 appearances for club & country

Brazil vs Japan Head To Head

Brazil have won 11 of the 14 previous meetings between the nations, but Japan emerged 3-2 winners in the most-recent clash in a friendly late last year. Ayase Ueda, who has two goals this World Cup, was on target for the winner.

Brazil Form Analysis

It hasn't been overly spectacular, but Brazil have got the job done so far at the World Cup, topping their group and now they will be hoping to raise their level for the knockout phase.

Brazil were outplayed at times against Morocco in their opening game, but a brilliant strike from Vini Jr secured the Selecao a 1-1 draw.

Carlo Ancelotti's side then eased to back-to-back 3-0 victories over Haiti and Scotland, ensuring they edged out Morocco on goal difference to top the group and arguably land on the more favourable side of the draw.

Brazil have a tough R32 matchup here, but are on course for a quarter-final clash with England and semi-final with Argentina, avoiding pre-tournament favourites Spain and France until the final.

Brazil Team News

Raphinha injured his hamstring against Haiti and remains sidelined for this clash, meaning Bournemouth prodigy Rayan should be in line for a second straight start after featuring against Scotland in the final group game.

Matheus Cunha has impressed since stepping in for Igor Thiago up front, scoring three goals for the tournament and should start again.

Japan Form Analysis

Japan arrived at this World Cup as genuine dark horses and they remain a big threat to the elite nations after an impressive showing in the group stage.

The Blue Samarai twice came from behind to draw 2-2 with the Netherlands before thumping Tunisia 4-0 in an electric display of attacking football.

Already ensured of a R32 spot, Japan drew their final group game with Sweden 1-1 and now have the chance to test themselves against the five-time World Cup champions.

After some heartbreaking World Cup knockout stage eliminations over the last three decades, Japan will be hoping to make history in Houston. Hajime Moriyasu’s side also have just one win in five attempts against South American teams at the World Cup.

Japan Team News

Ayase Ueda and Daichi Kamada are both chasing history, aiming to become the first Asian player to score three goals at a single World Cup.

Central defender Ko Itakura came off early against Sweden, but should be fit for this clash.

However, Takefusa Kubo remains in doubt as he struggles to return from a knee injury.
