Australia vs England Tips

Steven Smith failed to produce the runs in the 1st Test of this Ashes but he has proven himself too often to back out after one failure. I am continuing to back him with my best bet seeing the former captain score 50+ runs in the first innings.

Head to Head

Australia and England are level at 2-2 in their last five Test matches with one draw. Australia won the 1st Test of this Ashes series by nine wickets at the Gabba in Brisbane.

England’s History at the Adelaide Oval

Since 1982 England have visited the Adelaide Oval on 10 occasions, of which they have won two, lost six and drawn two.

The last time England played at the famous oval, Australia won by 120 runs in 2017. They last won there in 2010 when a magnificent knock of 227 runs by Kevin Pietersen set up a innings victory.

Australia Form

Australia will be in buoyant mood after a superb display in the 1st Test against England at the Gabba. A rampant first innings bowling display set up a comfortable nine wicket win for the hosts.

Pat Cummins, in his first game as captain, took 5-38 as Australia bowled England out for 147 runs. David Warner (94), Marnus Labuschagne (74) and Travis Head (152) took Australia to a commanding position by posting 425 runs.

On a wearing pitch Nathan Lyon stole the show in England’s second innings, taking 4-91 as the visitors reached 297, leaving Australia with 20 runs to win.

Alex Carey fell early but the Aussies cruised to a nine wicket win.

Australia Team News

Josh Hazelwood has been ruled out of the 2nd Test with a thigh strain. He is expected to be replaced by Jhye Richardson.

No other changes are expected.

England Form

England have huge concerns ahead of the 2nd Test in Adelaide. The batsmen have consistently failed over the last year and a half and it was no different in the 1st Test.

Jos Buttler top scored as England could only manage a measly 147 runs in their first innings. The bowlers were helpless as the hosts raced to 425 runs at more than four to the over.

With the match all but gone, England put in a better batting display as Dawid Malan scored 82 runs and Joe Root 89. The others however failed again as England could only manage 297 runs, leaving the hosts with 20 needed for the win.

Australia raced to the 20 runs for the loss of one wicket.

England Team News

There were concerns about Ben Stokes knee but he has been passed fit to play. The selectors have bigger issues though as the batsmen continue to fail and the bowling mix just didn’t work in Brisbane.

Stuart Broad should return to the side with one of Mark Wood, Chris Woakes or Ollie Robinson making way. With Adelaide set to provide some swing we could see a return for James Anderson.

Verdict

Steven Smith is backed to come good at the Adelaide Oval with a 50+ score in the first innings. He is also backed to top score in the Aussie first innings and win the man of the match award.

Joe Root was superb in the 2nd innings in Brisbane. He is the form batsmen for the visitors and is backed for another top score.
