In an exciting semi-final matchup at the Qatar Open, rising tennis star Victoria Mboko is set to face veteran Jelena Ostapenko. Mboko, only 19, has swiftly risen in the ranks, now aiming for a top 10 spot after notable victories, including a win over Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina. In contrast, Ostapenko boasts an impressive resume, holding the most wins in Doha history and frequently excelling in high-stakes matches. While both players have strong momentum, Ostapenko's experience might just edge out the youthful vigor of Mboko.

Victoria Mboko vs Jelena Ostapenko Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

An intriguing Qatar Open semi-final awaits on Friday as rising star Victoria Mboko comes up against two-time finalist Jelena Ostapenko.

Mboko has experienced a whirlwind rise over the last 12 months. This time last year, the 19-year-old had yet to win a main draw match on tour. Now, she's one win away from the top 10 and coming off an upset victory over Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina. Mboko has already captured a WTA 1000 title at home in Montreal and will be looking to double down in Doha. Meanwhile, Ostapenko has put together a resurgent week at a tournament she has thrived at in the past, with no player holding more wins at the 1000-event than the Latvian's 24.

When Ostapenko gets in this sort of mood and form, it usually takes a seismic performance to stop her. Indeed, Ostapenko has won six of her last eight matches against top 15 players. Mboko is obviously on fire, but she's still relatively inexperienced at this level and she's coming off gruelling back-to-back three-setters against Andreeva and Rybakina. I think this is a good spot for Ostapenko to register the upset and advance into a third Doha final.
  • Ostapenko has won six of her last eight matches vs top 15 players
  • Ostapenko has won more matches than any other player in Doha tournament history (24)
  • Ostapenko has a 12-4 record in WTA semi-finals in the last seven years, winning the last five
  • Mboko is 3-0 in WTA semi-finals in her young career

Mboko vs Ostapenko Head To Head

This will be the first career meeting between the pair.

Victoria Mboko Form Analysis

  • 2026 Record: 12-4
  • WTA Doha Record: 4-0
  • Current Ranking: No. 13
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 13

Mboko has won 12 of her 16 matches so far in 2026, backing up her electric breakout season in 2025 and now on the cusp of cracking the top 10.

The 19-year-old finished runner-up to Mirra Andreeva in Adelaide before making the fourth round of the Australian Open, falling to Aryna Sabalenka.

Making her debut in Doha this week, Mboko beat Marie Bouzkova and Vera Zvonareva in straight sets before back-to-back top 10 scalps over Andreeva, avenging that Adelaide final defeat, and Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina.

Mboko recovered from 2-4 down in the deciding set to come away with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 win in 2 hours and 23 minutes.

"Going into the match I knew I would have to put up a really big fight," Mboko said after the match.
"She'd just won the Australian Open, I've previously played her three times, so I think I knew what to expect coming into the match, and that it wasn't going to be easy at all. I feel like we both had our ups and downs in the match.
"Both of us maybe not starting so great. I think when you're not feeling your best and just getting it through, I think it feels good in a way when you're able to pull it through."

Jelena Ostapenko Form Analysis

  • 2026 Record: 6-4
  • WTA Doha Record: 24-9
  • Current Ranking: No. 24
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 5 (2018)

Ostapenko was in diabolical form before arriving in Doha - she had won just four matches since Wimbledon and failed to win back-to-back matches since Roland Garros.

However, the flashy former French Open champion has returned to her best tennis at one of her favourite tournaments, surging into the Doha semi-finals for the fourth time.

The Latvian battled past qualifier Anastasia Zakharova in three sets in her opening round and has since won six sets on the bounce, conquering Ekaterina Alexandrova, Camila Osario and Elisabetta Cocciaretto.

The former World No. 5 will now be targeting her 37th win over a top 15-ranked player.
