Elena Rybakina faces off against Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko in the Montreal semi-finals, a match promising an exciting clash of skills. While Mboko has dazzled with her extraordinary rise to the top 50 from outside the top 300, Rybakina remains the favorite, having beaten Mboko in their recent Washington encounter. Mboko has lit up the tournament with her extraordinary run to a maiden WTA 1000 semi-final, with the 18-year-old just the second local player since 1970 to make the Canada Open final four after Bianca Andreescu. This time last year, Mboko was ranked outside the top 300, but with her exploits in Montreal, she has cracked the top 50 in the live rankings. It's truly been a meteoric rise, but I'm tipping it ends (for now) in the semi-finals.
Rybakina has been gradually building towards her best tennis all season and is into her fifth semi-final of 2025, which is the most out of anyone on tour apart from Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek. Rybakina defeated Mboko in straight sets less than two weeks ago in Washington and although the Canadian is playing inspired tennis in her home country, I can see a repeat result taking place here.
Head To Head
As mentioned, Rybakina leads 1-0, registering a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Mboko at the Citi Open in Washington last week.
Elena Rybakina Form
Rybakina has put together a 37-14 record for the season coming into this encounter, reaching her fifth semi-final of the season - and one more win here would propel her back into the world's top 10.
It's been a very solid year for Rybakina, who picked up her ninth career title on the clay of Strasbourg and reached further semi-finals in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and last week in Washington.
With barely any points to defend for the remainder of the season, Rybakina has a great opportunity to push back towards the top five - but more importantly, she'll be targeting some big results for the remainder of the North American summer, starting with right now in Canada.
Rybakina has been largely untroubled in making the semi-finals of Montreal for the second time, dropping just one set against Dayana Yastremska and beating the likes of Hayley Baptiste and Jaqueline Cristian in straight sets before Marta Kostyuk retired after a set in their quarter-final clash.
Victoria Mboko Form
Mboko has registered a stunning 51-9 record at all levels so far this season, rising from outside the top 300 this time last year to a current live ranking of No. 48.
It's been a whirlwind year for Mboko, who has now advanced to a first WTA 1000 semi-final and firmly established herself as a star of the present and not just the future.
The 18-year-old has been steadily finding her feet on the main tour throughout the season and it's all culminated with a breakout tournament at her home event in Montreal.
Mboko has only dropped one set on her way to the final four (vs Marie Bouzkova in R3), defeating Kim Birrell, Sofia Kenin, top seed Coco Gauff and Jessica Bouzaz Maneiro in straights.
Coached by former Wimbledon runner-up Nathalie Tauziat, Mboko is just the fourth Canadian woman to reach the semifinals at a WTA 1000 event, joining Helen Kelesi, Eugenie Bouchard and Andreescu.

Verdict
Mboko has been the story of the tournament, but I think this could be a bridge too far for the 18-year-old.
Rybakina is a step up in class and the former Wimbledon champion was a straight sets winner recently when the pair met in Washington. Backing Rybakina to double down in Montreal.
The GOAT.
