Jiri Lehecka and Arthur Fils square off deep into a Masters 1000 tournament for the second time this season when the pair clash for a place in the Madrid semi-finals on Wednesday night.

Both Lehecka and Fils have been playing at a top 10 level over the last month or so and the winner will more than deserve their spot in the semi-finals. If you followed my Madrid outright tips preview and jumped on Lehecka to win the second quarter at $9.00, then this is a good opportunity to hedge your bets - but I'm confident the Czech can at least cover a +2.5 games start in what is looming as a very tight quarter-final contest in the Spanish capital.

Fils has been on fire since returning from a back injury, winning 19 of his 20 matches against players outside the top 10 - but that one defeat was in the Miami semi-finals to Lehecka. Fils was fatigued coming into that encounter, so I'm expecting a much more even clash here - but I still don't fully agree with Fils being installed as a $1.50-1.60 favourite.

These conditions suit Lehecha's heavy and aggressive game to a tee, while the Czech has also been in dominant serving form, easing past Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets in the previous round. Fils also had a good win over an in-form Tomas Martin Etcheverry. As mentioned, not much separates these two, so I will happily go with the value that Lehecka offers.

Lehecka endured a disrupted start to the season, once again dealing with persistent minor injury concerns that limited his momentum early.

When fully fit, the Czech has consistently shown he possesses genuine top-10 calibre and recent results suggest he is trending firmly in that direction after a highly productive stretch over the past month, rising to a live ranking of No. 13.

He underlined that upside with a breakthrough run to his first Masters 1000 final in Miami, highlighted by a standout win over Taylor Fritz, before backing it up with a Round of 16 appearance in Monte Carlo.

Having previously reached the semi-finals in Madrid in 2024, Lehecka has returned to the Spanish capital in strong touch, opening with a win over Alejandro Tabilo and following it up with an authoritative 6-4, 6-2 performance against Alex Michelsen, where he faced no break points and struck 10 aces.

Lehecka maintained that high level with a routine 6-3 6-3 dispatch of last year's Madrid semi-finalist Lorenzo Musetti, winning 28/34 first serve points and saving all four break points for an 11th top 10 scalp.

After missing eight months with a back injury, Fils is more than making up for lost time and has already returned to the top 20 in the live rankings.

With no points to defend after Roland Garros, I'm predicting Fils continues his rapid rise and breaks into the top 10 and perhaps even the top five by the end of the year.

The 21-year-old has won 21 of his 26 matches since returning to the tour, with four of those five defeats coming against top 10 players.

Fils has made at least the quarter-finals in six of his seven tournaments, including taking out the ATP 500 title in Barcelona and reaching his first Masters 1000 semi-final in Miami.

The Frenchman is back in another quarter-final in Madrid after never previously winning a match at the tournament, registering victories over Ignacio Buse, Emilio Nava and Tomas Martin Etcheverry.
