Rune has been sidelined for almost 12 months after snapping his achilles in Stockholm last year and has played just one tour-level event before arriving in Shanghai - winning just four games in a 6-3 6-1 defeat to Kyrian Jacquet in the first round of the Japan Open last week.

Recovering from an achilles problem is just as much mental as it is physical, especially in the early stages of a comeback. You second guess pushing off the mark and chasing down balls on the run. It's always in your head and that distracts you from the actual tennis.

The point is that Rune being a $1.40 favourite seems way off.

Yes, Altmaier is as erratic as they come, but the German usually lifts for the big occasions and playing a former top 10 player at a Masters 1000 is certainly that.

Altmaier should be motivated and he has eight top 10 wins under his belt - he has the talent to beat anyone on his day. Rune was well off the pace in Tokyo and I don't think he can make the required improvement in seven days to win this one.

The former World No. 4 snapped his achilles against Ugo Humbert in Stockholm 11 months ago and this will be his fourth match back.

Rune did well in Davis Cup to beat both Grigor Dimitrov and Iliyan Radulov, but the former is also outside the top 100 after injury issues and the latter is ranked 500+.

The Dane played his first tour-level event of 2026 in Tokyo last week and was comprehensively outplayed by Kyrian Jacquet, going down 6-3 6-1.

Rune has a decent record in Shanghai, making the R16 in 2024 before a quarter-final finish last year, where he was eliminated in three sets by surprise eventual champion Valentin Vacherot.

Altmaier remains one of the most inconsistent players on tour.

The German started the year in shocking form, losing eight consecutive matches on hardcourt in straight sets.

However, Altmaier found some form during the European summer, beating Ben Shelton on his way to the Hamburg quarter-finals on clay and Daniil Medvedev to make the Halle semi-finals on grass.

Altmaier then went 3-4 during the North American hardcourt summer, suffering a first round exit at the US Open to Zachary Svajda. A loss to Dino Prizmic in Davis Cup means Altmaier arrives in Shanghai on a three-match losing run.
