Parramatta Eels vs Penrith Panthers NRL Round 19 Tips - Eels form at Commbank enough to keep it close

In the upcoming NRL Round 19 matchup, experts predict a narrow win for the Penrith Panthers against the Parramatta Eels, likely within a 1-12 point margin. The Panthers have dominated recent encounters but usually by a small margin. Parramatta has shown strong performances at their home ground, Commbank Stadium, making this a highly anticipated clash. Defensive improvements have been a cornerstone of Penrith's recent success, while Parramatta struggles with their defensive line, particularly inside their 20m zone. Key player Tom Jenkins is expected to be a significant contributor for the Panthers.

Most punters will be backing the Panthers to run away with this one and of course I can see why. However, diving into the stats for the one it appears that these matchups are traditionally closer, since the Grand Final battle in 2022. The Eels won the next two matches after the loss in the GF and have since then lost the last 3 games but by 8 points or less.

With Penrith finding their feet again and also a lot of uncertainty around their squad after Origin and the possibility of resting their players throughout the match if they are named, I am picking the Eels to minimise the loss to a 1-12 margin.

Also, Parra have been good at Commbank, winning 3 of their last 4 there and also losing by just two converted tries or less in the previous 3 losses at their home stadium.

Tom Jenkins was held tryless for just the second time in his last 7 matches in the stalemate against the Bulldogs last week, but expect the Penrith winning to get back on the try scoring horse and cross against the Eels.

  • Penrith have won their last 3 matches against Parramatta by a 1-12 margin.
  • Parramatta have won 4 of 8 games at Commbank this season, with 3 of 4 losses by a margin of 1-12.
  • 6 of 8 Parramatta games played at Commbank Stadium have hit the under on the game total.
  • Thomas Jenkins has scored 5 tries in his last 4 matches.

Head to Head

Penrith have won the last 3 matches against Parramatta, however, they haven’t had it their own way with their victories coming by 8 points or less.

These two teams have met each other  staggering 16 times since 2019 with Penrith winning the head to head battle 10-6.

3 of the last 4 matches have gone over the game total.

Parramatta Eels Form Analysis

Parramatta couldn’t overcome the Saints a couple of weeks ago, taking a 34 to 20 loss into the bye after trailing 26-4 at halftime. The Eels couldn’t build any momentum after beating the Gold Coast at Commbank Stadium 26-20 the week prior.

If there is a positive to take out of the Eels season it is that they have been good at Commbank recently, winning 4 of their last 6 matches on their home field.

Otherwise, it once again has looked very glum and gloomy for the Eels with just 5 victories. Defence is the issue for the Eels, ranked 15th by conceding 26 points per match. Their goal line defence has been especially poor without Gutho saving them, allowing a try on every 8.6 tackles registered inside their 20m (14th in NRL).

Penrith Panthers Form Analysis

Penrith are on a 4-0 run and have dragged themselves from the bottom of the ladder to currently sit sixth with just 7 wins this season. It is incredible really that a team with a 7-9 record can still be in the hunt for a top four finish with a third of the season to play.

So, what has been the difference for Penrith over the last month, it is simple, their defence. The Panthers have held their opponents to an average of just 12 points over the last 4 matches, however, three of 4 opposition teams rank 11th or worse in points scored per game. It is still a major improvement.

Statistically not a lot has changed with the the Panthers key indicators all relatively the same besides allowing 1.2 linebreaks less than their season average over their last 4 matches. The improvement has been their goal line defence, allowing less tries while still giving up the same amount of tackles inside their 20m. That and also not given up long-range tries like they were earlier in the year.
