St George Illawarra Dragons vs Sydney Roosters, NRL Round 19 - Expert Prediction

The Roosters are set to get back on track following last week's shock loss to the Tigers and register their fourth consecutive victory over the Dragons in the second game on Super Saturday at Jubilee Stadium.

Sam Walker is set for a triumphant return to first grade after finally recovering from ACL/Thumb injuries, with the halfback to help the Roosters pile on the points once again in this matchup. Indeed, the Chooks have dominated the Dragons in recent times, winning the last three meetings by an average margin of 33.3 points (46-18, 42-12 & 60-18).

No need to overthink this one too much - backing the Roosters to cover a relatively small -5.5 line and Over 47.5 total points, which has been landing consistently for both teams lately. James Tedesco will be out for a big game following his exclusion from Origin this season and he's had tremendous success on the try-scoring front against the Dragons in recent times.

Roosters have won 12 of the last 14 meetings between the teams
Roosters have won the last three encounters by an average margin of 33.3 points
Roosters have covered a -5.5 line in six of their seven wins this season
Roosters have seen Over 47.5 total points in six of their last eight games
Dragons have seen Over 47.5 total points in their last three games
James Tedesco has scored a try in four of his last five games & scored nine tries in his last six appearances vs Dragons

Head To Head

As mentioned, the Roosters have thumped the Dragons over the course of the last couple of years, winning 42-12 and 60-18 in 2024 before a 46-18 triumph on ANZAC Day earlier this season, with Sandon Smith scoring 16 first-half points and James Tedesco crossing for a second-half double.

St George Illawarra Dragons Form Analysis

The Dragons have lost six of their last nine games heading into this contest and are part of five teams from 7th to 11th on the ladder that are separated by just two points - including the Roosters in ninth.

Needless to say this is a crucial clash for both teams if they harbour ambitions of featuring in the finals in September.

Shane Flanagan's side are battling away, but for me, they're missing that individual quality to take them to the next level. St George Illawarra fought hard against the table-topping Raiders in the nation's capital last week, but ultimately succumbed 28-24 as Canberra held on and picked up another 1-12 victory.

St George Illawarra Dragons Team News

Victorious Queensland star Valentine Holmes has been named to back up from Origin, meaning Corey Allan goes to 18th man.

Luciano Leilua (quad) and Hamish Stewart (concussion) return, so Michael Molo reverts to the bench and Viliami Fifita and Loko Pasifiki Tonga drop out the side.

Sydney Roosters Form Analysis

The Roosters have won six of their last 10 games coming into this encounter, but they will be rueing various close defeats that could have propelled them higher up the ladder.

Indeed, three of the Roosters' defeats in that period came by four points or less (24-20 vs Bulldogs, 26-24 vs Raiders and 30-28 vs Tigers).

Close defeats against top four teams in the Raiders and Bulldogs is certainly nothing to be ashamed of, but last week's defeat to a Tigers side without Jarome Luai and Api Koroisau could come back to haunt the Chooks - even if they too were without their Origin stars.

Sydney Roosters Team News

Speaking of Origin stars, Rob Toia, Connor Watson, Lindsay Collins, Angus Crichton and Spencer Leniu have all been named to back up for this clash.

In a huge boost, Sam Walker, Billy Smith and Victor Radley are also set to return here.

Verdict

St George Illawarra Dragons v Sydney Roosters

The big guns are back on deck for the Roosters, which should see them continue their recent dominance over the Dragons in a win that produces plenty of points.

Teddy Tedesco is tipped for another meat pie against the Dragons.
