Pakenham Favourite - Race 4 No. 3 Cavalry

There is still time for Cavalry to make his mark.

The Team Hawkes-trained galloper has shown potential across two short preparations but was very raw in those earlier appearances, including a debut third at Hawkesbury early last year when heavily backed.

He then resumed on heavy ground at Bendigo and made some inroads, although he was still well held.

Cavalry was beaten as an odds-on chance at Seymour in September before a break but still recorded the fastest last 200m of that program in a race won by Azazel, who won at Listed level only two starts later.

Two recent jump-outs suggest he is ready to go fresh at seven furlongs, and this is comfortably the weakest maiden he has contested.

Pakenham Next Best Bet - Race 6 No. 2 Chocolate Box

Chocolate Box has not saluted outside of a Mornington breakthrough first-up last autumn.

However, she has remained a consistent performer, often at shorter prices than she finds herself this evening, and with winkers on over a suitable rise to seven furlongs she appeals each-way.

The daughter of Deep Field loomed ominously on return at Pakenham but peaked late after covering ground.

She was then freshened for a Seymour run on February 20 when finishing strongly for third in a race won by Sussex Duchess.

That winner was subsequently competitive in a Benchmark 70 at Caulfield, while her latest 1400m run produced a narrow second to Betwitchery, who is rated well above anything in this field.

Beraldo Coffee Handicap Tips (Race 7)

Pakenham Value Bet - Race 7 No. 1 Bruiser Murphy

Did he beat much as an odds-on chance on debut at Moe? Perhaps not, but there was still merit in the February 22 performance.

The gelding was held up before taking a gap and still went on to record a soft win.

The Pakenham local arrived at that first race-day attempt off a stylish trial victory here on February 10.

He is certainly open to natural improvement with that race-day hit-out under his belt and gives the impression he will furnish with more racing.

Perfect Picture is a deserving favourite on exposed form but has had plenty of chances since her only win 14 months ago, and each-way odds are available for Bruiser Murphy.

Frankston Sand Soil & Mini Mix Handicap Tips (Race 8)

Pakenham Best Bet - Race 8 No. 9 Extragalactic

There was plenty to like about the first campaign from Extragalactic.

With a kinder draw she would likely have won on debut at Echuca, where the filly was forced back before finishing runner-up with the fastest last 800m, 600m and 400m of the September 20 meeting.

She quickly atoned with a comfortable Bairnsdale breakthrough before being thrown in the deep end at Listed level.

The filly was far from disgraced in the Crockett Stakes on Cox Plate Day and was spelled following that outing.

Her trial work leading in has been encouraging, including being narrowly edged late by Scenic Point in her latest jump-out, a sharp Listed-winning youngster from last year, and she resumes on her home track in a very winnable race.
