Pakenham Next Best Bet - Race 3 No. 6 Forceofone

He was a notable drifter in the market ahead of his debut in the Group 3 Chairman's Stakes at Sandown, where Forceofone got worked up pre race and failed via a last-of-eight finish.

Forceofone was spelled and gelded after that February 1 appearance and off some good lead-up work, the Hayes-trained galloper was heavily backed fresh at Sale on October 26.

He was well held in third, although he was also unsuited by the race shape when off the speed in an event where the first two out filled the quinella.

Off that 1200m performance, the extra furlong should suit second-up on Friday.

The set-up appeals here and the improvement expected at 1400m puts him firmly in the mix.

Pakenham Favourite - Race 5 No. 2 Black Peppermint

Black Peppermint is still lightly raced for a seven-year-old and while these staying benchmark affairs can be tricky, his lead-up has been just about faultless with this longer journey in mind.

He never threatened fresh over 1630m, but it was a sound Flemington return with the fastest last 400m of that BM70.

The son of Americain improved off that when placing at Seymour and it was another third when last seen at Sale, where he recorded the fastest last 600m and 400m of that 2200m contest.

He won fourth-up over a similar trip last prep and just missed at 3000m two starts later, so he'll stay.

Black Peppermint brings the right grounding into this assignment and the rise to 2500m looks the logical progression.

Pakenham Value Bet - Race 6 No. 3 Mission Gold

Another lightly raced galloper from the Patrick & Michelle Payne stable, Mission Gold placed in his first two attempts for Joe Pride and changed yards after a failure at start three.

Keeping him to 900m–1000m looks the key, with his three best efforts all coming in the shorter range, which included a Mildura breakthrough last month.

While he looked plain last start with 62kg at Wangaratta, that 1170m race was on-speed dominated.

Back in distance with give in the ground are both positives here, while Brad Rawiller taking the reins is another tick.

He can finish off when produced off a cold ride and the gelding could be finding the best ground out wide late.

While she didn't progress as a three-year-old, the talent was always evident with Miss Playlounge and perhaps her penny-drop moment came at Cranbourne last start where the daughter of Shamus Award arrived late to score.

We were with her at a more generous quote in that second-up outing, where a tighter turning track almost got the better of her.

The bigger expanses at Pakenham should be ideal, while there was good depth to that October 31 affair and this BM66 looks a touch weaker overall.

Staying at 1400m is a little query, but there's upside and she’s more than capable of going on with it now.

She gets her chance to build on that last win and appears well placed to measure up again.
