A competitive seven-race program is scheduled for Northam on Thursday, October 30, featuring a strong mix of local and returning gallopers.

Northam Best Bet - Race 4 No. 9 Herault

This gelding is from a nice middle-distance staying family and has always given the impression that getting beyond sprint trips would suit, with Herault stepping to 1400m for the first time.

He was good on debut in May when getting back and unsuited in a slowly run 1200m maiden, and via his 1100m resumption on October 16, was outsprinted late when third but worked home in the inferior going.

A cross-over nose band and tongue tie go on for this, while Clint Johnston-Porter stays aboard.

The added trip and gear adjustments both appeal, and he looks well placed to breakthrough.

Vero Handicap Tips (Race 5)

Northam Value Bet - Race 5 No. 2 Muddy Waters

Form does look very mixed on paper, but Muddy Waters has only completed eight starts, and the stable debut for Daniel O’Connor was much better than the eight-of-eleven read suggests, as he was back and then held up at key stages of that Belmont return.

His best two ratings have both come second-up, which includes a Northam breakthrough early last season, and when second-up at Ascot in February, he recorded the second-fastest closing sectionals of a metro event.

He interestingly resumed at 1400m last week, a trip he had never previously contested, and will only strip fitter from that run.

With improvement expected and a more suitable setup, he looks capable of producing a sharper effort.

ATC Handicap Tips (Race 6)

Northam Next Best Bet - Race 6 No. 4 Showlas

There’s been no public workout leading into this fresh assignment, which was also the case first-up in June when she led throughout to salute over this track and trip.

She wasn’t disgraced at Listed level following that and rounded out the winter with back-to-back seconds at Pinjarra, the latest coming via a Saturday 60+.

Showlas has upside and has shown enough over her prior two preps to suggest she can measure up in better company than this.

Apprentice Ava Catarino claims 3kg and was aboard for the last victory, which adds to her appeal fresh.
