Provincial racing heads to Gosford on Thursday with an eight-race program featuring several promising lightly raced gallopers and key wet-track chances.

Gosford Best Bet - Race 4 No. 3 She Swings

The autumn lead-up trials have been somewhat inconclusive, although She Swings was not knocked about in either of those heats.

That included a third-of-nine finish on April 13 before the filly settled back for an eventual fifth-of-eight placing in the fastest 1050m heat of the Randwick set on May 14.

An obvious query is returning first-up on wet ground, although that is the nature of this meeting with plenty of key contenders also untested in those conditions.

The David Pfeiffer stable often has runners ready to fire fresh and She Swings showed good ability during her first campaign.

That preparation included a stylish second-up breakthrough victory before consecutive runner-up finishes, while the latest was a fourth when running the fastest last 200m of the December 27 card at Randwick.

There was not much to take out of the first Canterbury trial on May 1, although that was a strong open-class heat.

Abandonment improved noticeably in the latest Rosehill hit-out on May 11, where the four-year-old was particularly strong through the line.

That trial suggested the gelding can run well fresh on Australian debut for the Bjorn Baker stable.

He is one of only two Heavy-track winners in the field and his maiden victory came on a Heavy 10 over this distance in New Zealand.

The four-year-old was competitive in all four Heavy 10 appearances and Aaron Bullock, who is striking at 40% in May, takes the ride for Thursday’s return.

Gosford Value Bet - Race 6 No. 10 Saloon Passage

While it was a tired effort at the end of her first preparation, there was not much to fault with the first three runs from this Chris Waller-trained filly.

The first of those came via a runner-up finish behind Aisle Two, who was a metro winner over summer.

After a fourth-of-eight finish in a Kembla Grange Super Maiden at start two, Saloon Passage was then metro placed at Canterbury on November 14.

That race was won by John Dory, who later just missed in a strong Brisbane assignment, while the form has also been boosted through runner-up Matias, who won his next two starts and was last seen taking out the Group 3 Frank Packer Plate at Randwick last month.

Both lead-up trials have been encouraging and Sam Clipperton takes the ride for Thursday’s fresh assignment.
