Gold Coast Tips January 17
Race 1 - 5:30PM Queensland Magic Millions Subzero Tips (2200m)
Best: 5. Belvedere Boys. It's his toughest ask to date, however, the penny has dropped with Belvedere Boys, while vs many out form and exposed rivals, he's well placed to bring up a hat-trick.
The five-year-old still has upside and after building into the campaign well, he relished the rise in distance to 2000m when saluting at Rosehill two starts back before his 2100m success at Eagle Farm.
Although he won on a Good 3 last time out, Belvedere Boys is more effective on rain affected ground and the gelding beat an in-form pair (Queen Air and Nikau Spur) in that latest win.
Value: 9. Bacio Del Mist. Although she could've been placed softer for her third-up tilt, Bacio Del Mist is going better than her recent form reads and up in distance suits on Friday.
The grey has no first-up form, which adds more merit to her return effort at Randwick-Kensington and she recorded the fastest last 200m of a 1550m Canterbury BM72 on December 20.
All five wins have come on wet tracks, which includes a metro victory last campaign before placing behind Etna Rosso (Group 3 winner two starts later) at Warwick Farm over 2110m.
Race 2 - 6:03PM Gold Coast Magic Millions 2yo Classic Tips (1200m)
Best: 10. Invincible Woman. The Victorian visitor recorded arguably the best two-year-old performance of the season when bolting in with the Magic Millions VIC 2YO Classic at Caulfield on December 14.
Invincible Woman has been given time in Queensland to adjust ahead of her Magic Millions 2YO Classic assignment, with a Gold Coast trial win recorded on December 31.
It's no surprise that Damian Lane sticks for her second race day appearance and the gun hoop was in good touch at the Sunshine Coast last Saturday when recording a winning double.
Her two jump-out wins ahead of the debut victory were both on rain affected ground, which includes a Heavy 8 triumph, although testing conditions on race day is an unknown with Invincible Woman.
Next Best: 8. Vein Girl. She landed a decent betting move when successful via the Debut Magic Millions feature last month over 1000m on the Gold Coast and there was more merit to that win that the margin indicates.
The daughter of Blue Point was the sole on-speed survivor in that five furlong feature and Vein Girl arrived to that debut appearance off a pair of trials wins (both on wet tracks).
While the only subsequent victor from that December 20 event was an Ipswich maiden winner, the second, third and fourth runners from The Debut all placed at their next starts.
Six furlongs in a stronger field is a big ask at start two, however, Vein Girl hasn't put a hoof wrong and the filly is from the same family as Victory Vein (Group 1 winner over 1400m and 1600m).
Value: 4. Luva Flutta. This Stuart Kendrick-trained colt caught the eye with a stylish trial win ahead of a debut third at Doomben on October 5 and he improved with race experience to win his next two outings.
The last of those victories was on a Heavy 8 surface on November 16, where Luva Flutta covered ground and two winners have been produced from that Sunshine Coast race.
He'll contest the Magic Millions 2YO Classic on the fresh side and the youngster worked well in a Doomben trial on December 23, where he was allowed to find his feet early in the heat.
The younger brother to Perudo (Listed winner over this distance) is a close relation to Scenic Peak, who was a Group 1 winner over 1600m and I suspect that Luva Flutta will run a strong 1200m.
Race 3 - 6:35PM Howden Magic Millions Snippets Tips (1200m)
Best: 5. Semana. This Ciaron Maher-trained galloper has come a long way, having recorded her first feature win on this card 12 months ago when successful in the Magic Millions Cup.
Semana was then five weeks between runs when dropping back to this trip to take out the Group 3 Triscay Stakes and she then placed in three of her next four tries (all at Group 1 level).
A versatile campaigner who is often produced on the fresh side, Semana hasn't finished out of the money at 1200m and she's also effective on all surfaces (both wins over this trip have been on wet tracks).
Value: 9. Nettuno. Not much has gone right for Nettuno via his last two appearances, with the rider lucky to stay aboard in his Listed tilt at Eagle Farm two back before rising in trip last start.
While 1200m appeared to suit in that latest attempt, he was tardy away from a wide draw before balancing up late to record the fastest last 200m of the Magic Millions Falvelon.
Nettuno will be aided by a fast tempo and a flying Craig Williams taking the reins is also a plus, while wet ground won't worry him (four of his five wins have come in rain affected tracks).
Race 4 - 7:05PM Magic Millions Cup Tips (1400m)
Best: 3. Chrysaor. Chrysaor can be hard to catch, however, I do like him on the fresh side for this 1400m event, with the Chris Waller-trained galloper having won first-up in September over this trip.
That Listed Flemington success was recorded on a Heavy 8 surface and he then found trouble at key stages when contesting the Group 1 Epsom Handicap before another freshen-up.
While he failed in two of his last three tries, the two flops were both recorded at Rosehill (he's been well held in all four attempts on that circuit) and Blake Shinn sticks from a December 23 trial.
Value: 16. Perfect Thought. He showed promise over his two and early three-year-old campaigns, with the highlight coming on soft ground when successful in the Carbine Club on Derby Day.
Perfect Thought wasn't able to progress following that second victory, albeit he was still Group 2 placed in Queensland when rounding out his three-year-old season in 2023.
The son of So You Think has turned a corner this prep, with a solid return effort backed-up by a drought breaking second-up win and he's been produced fresh in both runs this season.
Race 5 - 7:45PM Gold Coast Magic Millions 3yo Guineas Tips (1400m)
Best: 4. Bauhinia. Despite spotting her rivals a start on a tight-turning circuit, Bauhinia launched from the rear when taking out the Magic Millions 3yo & 4yo Stakes at Wyong on December 11.
Bauhinia was returning after rounding out her first campaign with unlucky sixth in the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes and that Randwick tilt had followed a slick breakthrough win at Newcastle.
Although she has drawn out for this feature attempt, Bauhinia is likely to settle off the speed irrespective and we'll know by Race 5 if the backmarkers are figuring on this program.
The daughter of Hellbent has completed a tick-over trial since her brilliant fresh triumph and she could be the one ready explode second-up via her first try over seven furlongs.
Next Best: 16. Yes Lulu. Given Yes Lulu was at the end of her first prep via her only previous try over 1400m, I'm willing to forgive that Flemington performance and she's furnished in her second campaign.
After getting her maiden out of the way second-up following a Group 3 fresh tilt up the straight, the Ciaron Maher-trained filly impressed when successful at Caulfield last month.
Yes Lulu came from back in the field via a race that otherwise suited the on-speed brigade and that form was franked on January 1 when Miraval Rose (third) won a Group 3 at Flemington.
All three of her older siblings have saluted at 1400m+, which includes Dandruff (2400m winner) and Jack The Lad (1600m Listed winner), so the seven furlongs appears fine on breeding.
Value: 3. Dawn Service. We were happy to oppose Dawn Service via his Randwick return on December 21, where the three-year-old was disappointing via fifth-of-eight finish and he was a big drifter in the market.
While he was always likely to improve from that fresh run, with that effort a blowout ahead of the Magic Millions, it's also worth noting that a slow recovery was detected post-race.
The son of Justify was a big improver second-up following a debut third, where the colt ran very good time in a Hawkesbury romp and he then ran into a smart Autumn Glow at Rosehill.
The first foal from Sunlight (three-time Group 1 winner), Dawn Service was a stakes winner over this trip in Melbourne last prep and he hasn't been out of the money in four tries on soft ground.
Race 6 - 8:20PM TAB Magic Millions F&M Tips (1300m)
Best: 6. Miss Roumbini. She's been a model of consistency, with four wins and three placings recorded from eight starts to date, while her worst finish an end of prep fourth in her first campaign.
Miss Roumbini is timing her run well for this Magic Millions assignment, having caught the eye on return at Group 3 level in a strong form race before saluting second-up at Ballarat.
The form through that latest event has stood-up, with two subsequent winners and a few stakes placegetters produced, and getting up to 1300m at this stage of the prep is suitable.
Value: 13. Left Field. Given how well she had performed first and second-up, the December 14 flop at Randwick was a head scratcher, albeit there were some excuses given post-race.
Left Field bounced back with a fourth-up victory on December 28 at Randwick, where the four-year-old arrived late and the extra 100m could be what she's searching for now.
The Deep Field mare has always threatened to win a good race and now with some confidence under the belt, she'll come right into calculations if the wider lanes are favoured.
Race 7 - 8:55PM Racing Queensland Magic Millions Open Tips (1300m)
Best: 1. Yellow Brick. You can tie runs in through the three topweights (Yellow Brick, Cifrado and Hidden Wealth) and the other market elect (Boom Torque) was an eye-catcher fresh, but a wet track looks a knock with him.
I'm leaning the way of a resuming Yellow Brick, who hasn't missed the top three in seven first-up attempts and the last two fresh appearances have resulted in seconds on heavy ground.
While he has 61kg, the gelding still has a 4kg weight swing in his favour on Hidden Wealth from his last return tilt in the Weetwood and he was good late in a recent Gold Coast trial.
Value: 16. Bohemian Lad. Despite looking up against it as a 72-rater, Bohemian Lad does get right down in the weights with 52kg and that could be crucial if it's a testing surface.
The four-year-old also appears to be on an upwards spiral, with the David Vandyke-trained galloper set for just his 12 start overall here and he looks suited to 1300m in this third-up attempt.
Bohemian Lad has only finished out of the money once in six tries on rain affected ground (all three victories have come on soft tracks) and he caught the eye in both December outings.
