Doomben Tips September 17

The Gibson Fillies And Mares Maiden Plate Tips (Race 2)

Doomben Value Bet - Race 2 No. 4 Pensiero

Pensiero, a daughter of So You Think, showed promise on debut when finishing third over 1200m at Ipswich in April. She raced on a wet track that day and again struck soft conditions when finishing fourth at the same venue next time.

That second Ipswich effort saw her beaten two-and-a-half lengths into fourth on a Soft 5, and she again raced from midfield. A subsequent step up to 1400m at the Gold Coast proved too much, finishing down the field in fourteenth before being spelled.

The filly has since had two trials to prepare for her return, including a solid third at the Gold Coast most recently.

Regular rider Tahlia Fenlon sticks with her, and she looks capable of resuming with a winning run at odds.

Doomben Best Bet - Race 3 No. 9 Wootten Hyde

Wootten Hyde trialled twice before debuting at this track at the end of July, where he finished strongly from off the speed to grab fourth in a 1110m maiden on a Soft 5.

He was only beaten just over a length in that nine-runner contest and showed versatility when ridden closer to the speed next start. That saw him run second in a 1200m maiden on a Good 4, with the first two putting five lengths on the rest.

The son of Wootton Bassett has shown upside in both starts, handling different patterns and ground conditions.

Barrier seven poses no problem, and with Jag Guthmann-Chester staying aboard, he looks ready to break through at the third attempt.

Doomben Roughie - Race 6 No. 3 Fort William

Fort William has been consistent in recent months, finishing top four in six consecutive starts since May. That sequence includes two wins, the latest coming at Ipswich last month over 1350m on good ground.

He won that Benchmark 58 by nearly a length-and-a-half, backing up a sound fourth over 1625m at Toowoomba just under two weeks earlier.

Although yet to win on a wet track, he has placed in three of five attempts on rain-affected going.

Chelsea Baker, who rode him to his Ipswich win, retains the ride and claims 3kg. From barrier 12 this is tougher, but he’s racing well enough to run a bold race at odds.

Doomben Next Best Bet - Race 7 No. 3 Simply Excels

Simply Excels has made a bright start to his career, winning twice from six starts, both during his previous preparation. He resumed with a narrow maiden win at Ipswich over 1200m in February and went on to score again on a Soft 5 here.

The son of Exceed And Excel has yet to miss a top-four finish, with his only unplaced run coming on debut last year. He has proven effective on wet ground, with all six career starts on rain-affected surfaces.

He raced wide before saluting here two starts ago, then followed that effort with a good second in Class 2 grade at Ipswich. A Heavy 8 proved testing at his latest outing in May, but he has since tuned up with two sharp trial wins.

Ryan Maloney retains the ride for Tony Gollan, and Simply Excels looks well placed to resume with another victory.
