Canterbury Tips September 17

Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale Tips (Race 3)

Canterbury Next Best Bet - Race 3 No. 7 Just A Journey

Just A Journey returned with a brave on-speed effort when runner-up behind Tuileries, a fitter and talented rival who was dropping in grade.

The rise in distance suits this filly, who showed toughness throughout her first preparation.

That campaign included back-to-back wins when stepping out second and third-up, so there is a strong platform to build from now.

From a low draw she can settle handy to the speed, which is often an advantage at Canterbury.

With the rail out six metres, that map and pattern should play perfectly to her strengths.

Captivant @ Kia Ora Handicap Tips (Race 4)

Canterbury Value Bet - Race 4 No. 1 Tastula

Tastula may still be a run short second-up, but the step to 1900m is the key to his chances.

Before a BM78 attempt that ended his last campaign, he had produced consistent efforts in the 1900m to 2000m range.

He broke through with a strong maiden win at Canterbury over this same trip, then quickly added a Kembla Grange Class 1 to his record.

That profile shows clear upside, particularly given he remains lightly raced for a five-year-old.

Getting back to this distance brings him right into calculations as a genuine value hope.

Asahi Super Dry Handicap Tips (Race 5)

Canterbury Best Bet - Race 5 No. 5 Hidden Motive

Hidden Motive was spelled after debuting in the Group 3 Breeders’ Plate, where he finished fourth last November.

He returned with a close second to Aerodrome, with that pair spacing the rest of the field.

That form was quickly franked, as Aerodrome went on to win the Clarendon Stakes at Rosehill and then perform well twice at Group level.

Hidden Motive continued with a placing at Randwick before producing back-to-back victories to close the prep.

His latest win was narrow, but the runner-up has since measured up in stakes grade, which boosts confidence.

Ranvet Handicap Tips (Race 7)

Canterbury Roughie - Race 7 No. 7 Debello

Debello’s record shows no second-up form, which makes the merit of his latest Kensington run even stronger.

He stuck on honestly there on August 27, starting at single-figure odds and closing off late.

That followed a first-up run at Rosehill in BM78 grade on a Heavy 8, conditions that did not suit.

Sticking to midweek BM72 level looks a more suitable assignment at this stage of the campaign, with another chance to measure up in the same grade he contested last start.

He also gets back onto firmer ground after three straight heavy-track runs, and that makes him an appealing roughie.
