Doomben Best Bet - Race 2 No. 1 Starsonus

The four-year-old has registered good placed efforts in four of his five previous starts including when third twice at Eagle Farm last prep.

The second of those third-place finishes saw the gelding beaten a length when contesting a 1400m maiden held on a good 4 track.

While a beaten short-priced favourite that day the pick acquitted himself well and he has demonstrated that he handles wet conditions in two starts this time around.

The selection lost out by just over one-and-a-half-lengths when third over 1200m at Eagle Farm on his return to action last month.

The gelding shaped as if the step back up in distance would suit that day and he went on to finish one place better when again racing over 1200m on soft going at Ipswich earlier this month.

The pick came close to defying a double figure barrier on that occasion and upped in distance barrier fourteen shouldn’t pose too many issues given he is expected to race from mid-division.

The Zoustar gelding has shown good form over a variety of distances this prep including when dropped back to 1350m for a Benchmark 70 handicap here at the start of this month.

The four-year-old lost out by less than two lengths when placing third on a wet track that day having previously disappointed over 1615m in a Benchmark 70 handicap here in February.

The pick had been freshened following that below par effort which saw him attempt to complete a double having saluted by a narrow margin over 1710m at Gold Coast the previous month.

The gelding had a subsequent dual winner back in second when taking a Benchmark 62 handicap on that occasion and he should have no issues stepping back up in distance here.

The selection is reunited with his jockey that day Andrew Mallyon for the first time since with the pair looking capable of recording their second win together.

Sky Racing Class 5 Handicap Tips (Race 7)

The Chris & Corey Munce-trained filly has been in good form this prep finishing in the first four in all four outings.

Three of those efforts have come at Ipswich including when resuming with a second over 1100m on a wet track there in early February.

The daughter of Outreach contested a Benchmark 70 handicap that day and she broke through for a win when successful on a sound surface at Eagle Farm on her penultimate start.

The four-year-old came home just under half-a-length clear of her nearest pursuer when racing at Benchmark 78 level over 1200m on that occasion.

The pick lost out by a narrow margin when attempting to complete a double stepped up to 1350m at Ipswich subsequently and the return to 1200m is in her favour here.

Siobhan Routledge’s mount is unbeaten in two starts at this venue and looks value to defy a wide barrier racing with a visor replacing the blinkers worn so far this season.

The son of No Nay never demonstrated good form in Victoria for Matthew Ellerton last prep winning three times including in a maiden at Ballarat last June.

The four-year-old ended that prep with a double following up a 1628m success in a Benchmark 0-58 handicap at Moe with a victory over 1600m at Bendigo at the end of August.

Both of those victories came on soft surfaces and the gelding performed demonstrated improvement in his barrier trials prior to making his first start for Matthew Dunn.

That reappearance saw him beaten just under three-and-a-half-lengths into sixth in a Benchmark 70 handicap over this course and distance at the start of this month.

The selection usually improves for his first start back and a step forward is expected here with the slight drop in grade a further positive.

Connections have opted to remove the blinkers worn first up for this event and their representative may prove up to surprising.
