Bunbury Next Best Bet - Race 3 No. 6 Heavenly Rapture

It has been a strong start to the season for trainer Mitchell Pateman, whose nine winners in August came at a 29% strike rate, while his first five starters in September have returned a winner and two placegetters.

Pateman prepares Heavenly Rapture, who was a touch plain when stepping to a mile at Belmont on August 29 after resuming over 1300m, although she was set a big task in that latest outing and can improve third-up with the 1600m run under her belt.

Thursday's Class 1 provincial assignment represents a significant drop in grade for the daughter of Playing God, who was supported at a big price first-up at Belmont and, despite finding 1300m a little sharp, produced the second-fastest closing sectionals behind handy winner Bosun.

She began to furnish as her three-year-old season progressed, breaking through over 1800m at Pinjarra before a competitive fifth-of-eight at Listed level when rising to 2200m.

That campaign culminated with a fifth in the Group 3 WA Oaks, and back in much easier company here, Heavenly Rapture looks far better placed.

Bunbury Best Bet - Race 4 No. 13 Pistone

Another leading chance on Thursday's program from the Mitchell Pateman stable is first starter Pistone, who has impressed in two August trials after being given time following a pair of autumn heats.

The youngster won a 400m Belmont trial on August 17 before producing an even more dominant performance over 1000m on August 31, taking out a fast-run maiden-class heat in good style.

The only trial over the same distance that morning to record a quicker time was won by Kraken Time, a talented galloper who was competitive at Group 3 level during spring before a spell.

Pistone looks a straightforward type with good tactical speed, and connections appear to have found a thin set-weights maiden where much of the exposed form is limited.

Vino Lass has drawn out after being safely held in three previous attempts, while Agent Remington may provide some resistance at an each-way price, but Pistone looks to have every chance to make a winning debut.

Bunbury Value Bet - Race 6 No. 5 Run Pattie Run

There was some depth to the Bunbury 1100m Class 3 that Run Pattie Run resumed in on July 30, and her seventh-of-11 finish was much better than it reads on paper.

The six-year-old settled off the speed and was denied an outside run turning for home, forcing her to lose momentum and switch back towards the inside before recording the third-fastest final 200m of the race won by Cinque Stelle, who subsequently franked the form with two Saturday victories.

Run Pattie Run was specked at a price when a month between runs on August 27, but she failed to get through a Heavy 9 and was also unable to find the faster lanes out wider, making the return to firmer ground a clear positive on Thursday.

Bunbury has been the place to catch her, with all three career wins coming at this circuit, while the 1200m track-and-trip record reads particularly well with two victories and two placings from five attempts.

With good speed expected from the likes of Diego Dynamite and Modern Girl drawn wider, the race could be set up for Run Pattie Run to get involved late at a big price.
