Ballarat Next Best Bet - Race 3 No. 6 Filigree Shadow

The jump-out performances of Filigree Shadow suggested she had ability prior to making her debut on the turf course at this venue, with those efforts including two victories.

The most recent of those successes came over 800m at Flemington early last month, and the expensive $475,000 yearling purchase then produced a solid effort when finishing fourth over 1200m here on debut.

Racing on a Heavy 8 surface, the filly settled in midfield before finishing five lengths from the winner in a race that has since produced a subsequent winner from the seventh-placed runner.

Unable to make an impact in the straight on that occasion, the drop back in distance shouldn't be an issue for a stable that performs well at this circuit.

A visor replaces the blinkers worn on debut and, while the wide barrier is a concern, improvement is expected and she is taken to break her maiden at the second attempt.

Manhari BM56 Handicap Tips (Race 4)

Ballarat Best Bet - Race 4 No. 6 Del Lirenza

After placing third in her first two starts on turf, Del Lirenza showed an immediate liking for the synthetic surface when breaking through in impressive fashion here last time.

Racing over this distance, the filly scored by nearly five lengths on her synthetic debut after beginning well and controlling the race from the front.

The form of that victory received a timely boost when third-placed Morning Ralph returned to win here on Friday.

The daughter of Anders has again drawn an inside barrier, with promising apprentice Chelsea Thompson taking a valuable 3kg off her back.

The sole juvenile in the field is expected to be ridden positively once more and, despite meeting winners for the first time, looks capable of completing back-to-back victories.

Ballarat Value Bet - Race 5 No. 6 Packers Journey

Consistency has been a feature of Packers Journey's recent form, with the mare finishing runner-up in both previous starts on the Ballarat synthetic, including over this track and trip last time.

The four-year-old filled second placing after stepping out of maiden company, having broken through for her first victory at Donald on her previous start.

Ridden patiently on that occasion, the Overshare mare finished strongly to be narrowly denied in a blanket finish.

She also demonstrated her versatility by leading throughout to score on wet turf at Donald in the victory prior to that effort.

A wide barrier shouldn't pose too much of a problem, with Neil Dyer's representative having previously performed well from a difficult draw, while Nadia Daniels takes the ride for the first time and the pair appeal as value.

Hygain Edge BM56 Handicap Tips (Race 7)

Ballarat Roughie - Race 7 No. 11 Secretdream

A Benchmark 56 victory on turf at Colac in January demonstrated Secretdream's ability to be competitive at this level.

Since then, the mare has produced several sound efforts in defeat, including a fourth placing over 1200m here when she was one of our selections.

Patient tactics were employed that day after similar riding instructions had been used on her synthetic debut over 1100m at this venue.

Jumping from a wide barrier on that occasion, the mare was beaten just over half a length after making good late ground, with her latest effort suggesting the rise in distance will suit.

Cian Macredmond's mount is expected to be ridden cold once more and has shown she can measure up in this grade, making her capable of providing the Niki O'Shea stable with another winner.
