Portugal vs Spain World Cup Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

Iberian rivals Portugal and Spain collide in a heavyweight World Cup R16 clash at the AT&T Stadium on Monday.

Pre-tournament favourites Spain have fallen behind France with the bookies, but the fact remains they haven't conceded a single goal this World Cup and are coming off a dominant 3-0 victory over Austria in the R32 - which, remarkably, was the first time they've scored multiple goals in a knockout match in this competition since 1994.

Meanwhile, Portugal were made to sweat as Croatia launched a late assault in their R32 encounter, but ultimately emerged 2-1 winners, with 41-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo scoring his first World Cup knockout goal. Again, it wasn't convincing - and the first half was a complete dud - but Portugal got the job done and they can enter this clash as underdogs with a 'nothing to lose' mentality, which should serve them well.

Taking recent meetings into consideration, Spain's rock solid defence and Portugal to likely bunker down in an attempt to frustrate La Roja, I think a low-scoring contest plays out here.

So Under 2.5 goals is the main play, while I think there's value on a 0-0 stalemate - a score that has played out in three of the last seven meetings. A draw at the end of 90 minutes also appeals, while Spain striker Mikel Oyarzabal remains in prolific form and is backed for two shots on target.
  • Six of the last seven meetings have ended in a draw after 90 mins
  • Four of the last five meetings have seen Under 2.5 goals
  • Three of the last seven meetings have ended in a 0-0 score after 90 mins
  • Spain have drawn competitive games with Turkey, Portugal, Netherlands & Cape Verde in the last 18 months
  • Portugal have drawn two of their four World Cup games this tournament & were a VAR decision away from ending 90 mins level with Croatia
  • Portugal are unbeaten in 16 of their last 17 games
  • Spain are unbeaten in their last 34 games
  • Spain have only conceded four goals in their last 11 games at major tournaments
  • Mikel Oyarzabal has registered 17 shots, four goals & eight shots on target in four games this World Cup

Portugal vs Spain Head To Head

Spain have only lost seven of the 41 previous meetings between these two neighbouring rivals - but Portugal emerged triumphant via penalties in the Nations League final last year.

Portugal Form Analysis

It was an underwhelming start to the World Cup for Portugal as they were held to a draw by Congo, but they bounced back with a crushing victory over Uzbekistan, with Ronaldo getting off the mark with a brace.

Portugal were outplayed by Colombia in a 0-0 draw as they let their opponents fire a whopping 24 shots, settling for second spot in the group.

Roberto Martinez's side were thrown into a R32 clash with 2022 semi-finalists Croatia, but managed to hold on for a 2-1 win, with Ronaldo and Goncalo Ramos on target after Ivan Perisic's opener.

The Selecao's World Cup runs ended at this stage in 2010 and 2018, so they would love nothing more than to beat their rivals to snap that sequence here.

Portugal Team News

Martinez is likely to stick with the same starting team that beat Croatia, with Ronaldo again up front.

Ramos, who has just signed with AC Milan, averages a goal or assist every 37 minutes at the World Cup, which is the best of any Portuguese player with at least five goal contributions in history.

Spain Form Analysis

It was also a slow start to the World Cup for Spain, who couldn't find a way through an inspired Cape Verde side, settling for a 0-0 draw.

La Roja bounced back with a comfortable 3-0 win over Saudi Arabia before topping the group and knockout out Uruguay with a narrow 1-0 triumph.

Luis de la Fuente's side then produced their best performance of the World Cup, easing past Austria 3-0 in the Round of 32.

Mikel Oyarzbal scored a brace, bringing his total to four for the tournament and 17 in his last 16 starts for Spain, while Pedro Porro was also on target with a header.

Spain Team News

Yeremy Pino (shoulder) and Nico Williams (adductor) both remain in doubt for Spain ahead of this clash.

Oyarzbal will once again get the nod up front, flanked by Lamine Yamal and Alex Baena.
