The Western Bulldogs are favored to secure an important win against Richmond in AFL Round 20, 2026 at Marvel Stadium. While the Bulldogs bring superior class and a strong midfield, their recent wins have been by narrow margins rather than blowouts. Richmond, despite a tough season, has shown resilience and could keep the score closer than expected. Experts recommend backing Richmond with the points start and focusing on player props for Marcus Bontempelli, Ryley Sanders, and Tim Taranto.

Western Bulldogs vs Richmond, Round 20 2026 - Expert Prediction

The Western Bulldogs should have too much class to bank another important four points when they take on Richmond at Marvel Stadium but don't expect the blowout the market suggests.

The Bulldogs head in as strong favourites but unlike last season and in early parts of 2026 when big totals and a sketchy defence were the norm, their recent wins have been built on control rather than scoreboard domination.

While they remain one of the competition's stronger midfields, their recent performances have been built around limiting opposition opportunities and capitalising on turnover as Luke Beveridge looks to adapt in a bid to get the Bulldogs to add another dimension to their game, resulting in tighter margins than many have come to expect.

Richmond has endured another difficult campaign, but there have been signs of resilience. The Tigers refused to throw in the towel against Hawthorn last weekend, winning the final quarter after trailing heavily at half-time, with inaccuracy costing them greater respectability than the 70-point margin.

They continue to compete around stoppages and should be capable of hanging around long enough to keep this margin respectable if they can avoid gifting the Bulldogs easy scores from turnover.

Richmond with the 41.5-point start an appealing play. With the Tigers conceding the second-most disposals in the competition, expect Marcus Bontempelli and Ryley Sanders  to be heavily involved around the football, while Tim Taranto can continue his string of 25+ games for the Tigers.

The Bulldogs' highest winning margin in their past seven wins has been just 22 points.
Marcus Bontempelli has had 30+ disposals in his last six matches against Richmond.
Ryley Sanders is averaging 25 disposals this season.
Tim Taranto has had 25+ disposals in each of his past six matches against the Bulldogs.

Head to Head Stats

The Bulldogs have won the past four between the two sides and have won the past six at Marvel Stadium. The past three have gone the way of the Dogs by 55 points or more.

Standout player performances in the recent head to heads have come from;

  • Tim Taranto (Tigers)- 25+ disposals in each of his past six matches against the Dogs.
  • Marcus Bontempelli (Dogs)- 30+ disposals in each of his past three against Richmond.
  • Aaron Naughton (Dogs)- 20 goals from his past seven matches against Richmond and 16 from five without Sam Darcy in the side.
  • Rhyan Mansell (Tigers)- 2+ goals in three of his past four against the Dogs.

Western Bulldogs Form Analysis

The Bulldogs have produced an up-and-down campaign but remain firmly in the finals mix, sitting seventh on the ladder with an 11-7 win-loss record. They have now won six of their past eight matches and come off a hard-fought nine-point victory over Gold Coast. Interestingly, all six of those wins have been by 16 points or less, highlighting a shift away from the big-margin victories that were once commonplace.

Last week, Marcus Bontempelli again proved the difference, kicking three goals from 23 disposals in the low-scoring win. Bailey Williams continued his outstanding season with 29 disposals across half-back, while Matt Kennedy played a crucial role inside forward 50 with three goals. Aaron Naughton also hit the scoreboard and has now kicked 11 goals across his past five matches.

The Bulldogs return to Marvel Stadium, where they hold a 6-4 record this season. Their ability to force turnovers in dangerous areas and use the ball efficiently has become a defining feature in recent weeks, even if the winning margins haven't reflected their overall control.

Western Bulldogs vs Richmond Team List & News

  • To be updated after team selection on Thursday.

Western Bulldogs Team News

No injuries for the Dogs to come out of the win over Gold Coast last weekend. Bailey Dale remains on the sidelines and is likely done for the season, joining Sam Darcy. Joel Freijah was originally omitted from the side last week, only to come back in as a late change. He picked up just 11 disposals and it will be interesting to see if Beveridge sends him to the VFL to work on his craft.

Richmond Form Analysis

Richmond has endured a difficult season, winning just two matches — against West Coast in Round 8 and Essendon in Round 11 — and enters Round 20 having lost seven consecutive games. Last week they were beaten by 70 points by Hawthorn, although the final margin didn't fully reflect their competitiveness after half-time, with the Tigers winning the final quarter and showing encouraging fight late in the contest.

Despite winning the clearances 35-29 against the Hawks, Richmond managed just 1.6 (12) from stoppages, while Hawthorn converted the same source into 6.6 (42), including 3.0 (18) directly from centre clearances. The Hawks also dominated possession, finishing +102 in disposals, +101 in uncontested possessions, +39 in uncontested marks and +62 in handball receives.

Tim Taranto again led the midfield with 27 disposals and has now produced 25+ disposals in each of his past three matches, along with five goals during that period. Dion Prestia gathered 25 disposals in his milestone match, while Richmond's inefficiency in front of goal proved costly as it finished with 6.16 (52).

Richmond Team News

Richmond will assess Taj Hotton after he suffered a rolled ankle against Hawthorn, although the club was optimistic immediately after the match. Jacob Green entered concussion protocols after the loss, while Jack Ross is expected to be available after the club took a cautious approach following his second concussion within six weeks. Sam Lalor successfully returned on managed minutes and is expected to build his workload again this week.Tyler Sonsie will be considerd after a strong match at VFL level last weekend.
