GWS Giants vs Sydney Swans AFL Round 20 Tips - Giants to respond against shaky Swans
Greater Western Sydney hosts the Sydney Swans in a high-stakes Round 20 Sydney Derby at ENGIE Stadium. Despite the Giants’ inconsistent form, they present strong value as underdogs, especially with Aaron Cadman’s strong goal-kicking record against the Swans. Sydney, fighting to retain a top-four spot, has shown defensive vulnerabilities, losing three of their last four. Key outs for both sides include Toby Greene (GWS) and Harry Cunningham (Sydney). Expect a tight contest—Giants are tipped to push the Swans, with Cadman and Errol Gulden both likely to have major say on the outcome.
- The game will be played at ENGIE Stadium on Saturday, 25th July, with the bounce at 4:35 PM (AEST)

Greater Western Sydney has been almost impossible to trust this season, but the Giants with a 9.5-point start looks a value play when they take on their cross-town rival, Sydney.
The Swans form has become increasingly shaky, having lost three of their past four matches. In their past eight that have won four, which include unconvincing wins over St Kilda and Port Adelaide by narrow margins, while the wins over Richmond and the Western Bulldogs haven't been enough to mask a side that has become far more vulnerable defensively.
Opponents are now regularly getting hold of them on the scoreboard, with the Swans conceding just under 100 points per game across the past month.
The Giants have shown they can match it with the AFL's best, but they have also developed an unfortunate habit of dropping games they should win. That inconsistency makes them difficult to back with confidence, yet they generally lift for the Sydney Derby when played at ENGIE Stadium.
The likely absence of Toby Greene leaves the Giants short on leadership but Aaron Cadman appeals to continue his strong record against the Swans. The young spearhead has consistently troubled the Swans and should again receive quality supply if Finn Callaghan, Tom Green and the Giants midfield can break even through the middle.
Defensively, the Giants have held up far better than their cross-town rivals despite the inconsistency. Sam Taylor anchors one of the competition's strongest backlines, while Lachie Whitfield and Lachie Ash continue to generate plenty of rebound. If GWS can tighten up around stoppages after last week's issues, it has the defensive profile to keep Sydney's dangerous forwards under control, while they will be searching for greater accuracy in front of goal. Jake Stringer had a shocker with 0.7 against Essendon last weekend in a match the Giants threw away.
Sydney's recent slide suggests the gap between these sides is much narrower than the ladder indicates. Expect another tight derby where the Giants can stay within the line and potentially spring the upset if they finish their work in front of goal. Take Cadman in goal markets, while Errol Gulden has a great record against the Giants and is a strong play for 25+ disposals.
- GWS have won three of their past four matches at ENGIE Stadium and defeated the Swans by 44 points the last time the two sides met at the venue.
- Aaron Cadman has kicked 10 goals from his past four matches against Sydney.
- Errol Gulden is averaging over 30 disposals in his past seven matches against the Giants.
- Sydney have lost three of their past four matches.
Head to Head Stats
Sydney were 41-point winners in the Round 6 meeting at the SCG this season, but the Giants took out the last fixture at ENGIE Stadium by 44 points, with that match held in Round 20 last season. The Swans have won six of the past seven between the two sides.
Standout player performances in the recent head-to-heads have come from:
- Errol Gulden (Swans) – has averaged 31 disposals in his past seven matches against the Giants.
- Brodie Grundy (Swans) – 27 disposals in the most recent meeting.
- Aaron Cadman (Giants) – 2+ goals in each of his past four against the Swans for a total of 10.
- Charlie Curnow (Swans) – three goals in each of his past two matches against the Giants.
GWS Giants Form Analysis
The Giants have been the Jekyll and Hyde side of the AFL this season, capable of beating the competition's best before producing costly losses against lower-ranked opposition. They famously knocked over Brisbane by 78 points in Round 11 and Fremantle by 21 points three weeks ago, but have also suffered disappointing defeats in games they were expected to win.
Last week was another example, going down to Essendon by three points after failing to capitalise on numerous opportunities. The Giants finished with 8.16, creating enough chances to win before poor conversion proved decisive. Jake Stringer endured a nightmare afternoon in front of goal, finishing with 0.7 after booting seven goals against Geelong the previous week.
Several of the Giants' usual midfield stars were kept relatively quiet. Clayton Oliver collected 23 disposals after producing 30 or more in six of his previous nine matches, while the side struggled to generate its usual dominance around stoppages. The Giants return to ENGIE Stadium, however, where they have won four of their six matches this season and generally produce their best football.
Sydney Swans Form Analysis
Sydney enters Round 20 with a 13-5 record but is beginning to lose its grip on a top-four position after dropping three of its past four matches. Last week's 16-point loss to Adelaide was particularly concerning, handing the Swans their first defeat at the SCG this season.
Isaac Heeney (29 disposals) and Tom Papley (four goals) provided plenty of spark, but Sydney was beaten around the contest, losing both contested possessions and clearances. Charlie Curnow was held goalless after kicking 28 goals across his previous six matches, while Heeney has now registered 30 or more disposals in five of his past seven outings. Errol Gulden continues to accumulate consistently, recording 25+ disposals in two of his past three matches.
While the Swans remain one of the competition's most dangerous attacking sides, recent weeks have exposed some defensive vulnerabilities. Opponents have found success by applying sustained pressure around the contest and limiting Sydney's ability to move the ball quickly through the corridor, an area GWS will look to exploit.
