Sydney Swans vs Melbourne Demons AFL Round 8 Tips - Dees cover in a goal-fest

The Sydney Swans are powering through the 2026 AFL season, showcasing strong offence and earning Premiership favourite status. However, expert analysis suggests that while the Swans are top of the table, Melbourne Demons—consistent in their head-to-head performances and currently exceeding expectations—should cover the 31.5-point line as the underdog. Expect a high-scoring, fast-paced match with key players like Chad Warner and Bayley Fritsch predicted to score multiple goals. The recommendation: back Melbourne to cover the spread in a close encounter.

Sydney Swans vs Melbourne Demons AFL Round 8 Tips

Sydney Swans vs Melbourne Demons, Round 8 2026 - Expert Prediction

The Swans have been dominating in 2026, however, the Demons have controlled this head to head meeting in recent trends which points to the underdog covering with a 31.5-point head start from the bookies.
There is no denying that Sydney are the most dangerous team in the competition at the moment and are rightly favourites for the Premiership, however, Melbourne have proven that they have been underestimated in 2026 and can match it with the big dogs of the competition.

Not by any means am I suggesting that the Dees will get the victory here but the line here is too large so I am leaning to the away underdog in Melbourne. If the Demons are on this match is going to go back and forth like an old Federer vs Nadal match. Two midfields that move the ball fluently and rapidly through the corridor and on the outside.

I expect points will flow at both ends and with both sides being strong in their one-on-one matchups it can be the smalls or more versatile mids that will get the open looks on goal.

From Melbourne’s side, Bayley Fritsch will be a danger. Fritsch has found space with the resurgence of Brody Mihocek in Demons colours and has started to kick goals consistently. For the Swans, Chad Warner will look for his moments to push forward and find space with all of the attention on the Sydney talls.

  • Melbourne have not lost to Sydney by more than 22 points since 2019.
  • Melbourne have won 2 of the last 3 matches against the Swans at the SCG.
  • Both Sydney and Melbourne have scored at least 100 points in all of their victories this season.
  • Bayley Fritsch has scored 2+ goals in 4 of his last 5 games.
  • Chad Warner has 2+ goals in 3 of his last 4 matches

Head to Head Stats

The Demons brushed aside the Swans in Round 11 2025, controlling the match from start to finish and running away with a 53-point victory.

Melbourne have won 3 of the last 4 matches against Sydney.

Sydney Swans Form Analysis

The Swans are the team to beat in the AFL firming into the shortest odds for the Premiership after a blistering 6-1 start. The record is one thing but it is more how they are doing, blowing their opposition off the park, no matter who they face.

Sydney's high-octane attack is matched by none, averaging 116 points per game kicking 100+ in all 6 of their victories this season. They say that the best defence is a top offence and in Sydney’s case that is the truth with the swans also conceding the least amount of points of any team, averaging 65.28 points against per match in 2026.

The Swans had some issues last season inside 50, that is certainly not the case this campaign with Charlie Curnow leading up front with 19, after kicking 7 last week against the Bulldogs. Joel Amartey has stepped up with 16 and Justin McInerney, Isaac Heeney and Chad Warner all kicking 10 a piece.

Melbourne Demons Form Analysis

The Dees are sitting pretty in fourth after seven rounds of footy, well above their expectation at the start of the season. If it won’t for a lapse against Essendon, Melbourne would be a part of the 6-1 club, however, Steven King will be more than pleased with where they are placed to start the year.

The Demons revitalization has come from some electric, high-speed ball movement, getting the Sherrin inside their forward 50 (57.6 time per game) and winning strong centre clearance ball, ranked third in the AFL. It has not just been moving the ball forward but the quality ranked third in the league with 14.6 marks inside 50.

Led by their fearless leader Max Gawn, the young guns at the Demons have stepped up, Caleb Windsor has seen more ball and is developing into a more aggressive midfield with an average of 17 disposals and 33.1 contested possessions per game, while the introduction of Brody Mihocek has been positive with the big kicking 8 goals in his last 4.

However, there has been no bigger performer than Kysaiah Picket who is now a top-five player in the league averaging 24.6 disposals and has kicked 10 goals.
