In a significant AFL 2026 Round 8 prediction, the Richmond Tigers are tipped to claim an upset victory over the West Coast Eagles. Despite being 15.5-point underdogs, Richmond has a favorable history against West Coast, winning 6 of their last 7 meetings. The return of Tim Taranto is pivotal, with his leadership expected to help control gameplay. Both teams have struggled defensively, but Richmond's youth and past performances at Optus Stadium might give them the edge. The match promises to be an intriguing battle of strategies and determination.

West Coast Eagles vs Richmond Tigers, Round 8 2026 - Expert Prediction

The Tigers are backed to get the upset against West Coast in one of the few chances they will get at a victory in 2026.
Richmond head to Optus Stadium as 15.5 point underdogs as the only winless side in 2026. The statement is bold that they will get their first victory of 2026, however, the head to head trends point in that direction as well as the old ‘eye-test’.

The Tigers held their own for almost three quarters against Melbourne last week and despite their long injury list the young cubs are starting to pull together. West Coast feels more like the opposite. Despite getting a couple of wins early in the season, the Eagles look more disjointed and this could give the Tigers a chance to strike against an opponent they beat twice last season.

Both teams have been poor without the ball and building consistent pressure on their opponents for four quarters has basically been non-existent. It will be the side that can maintain their hands on the ball and force their opponents into intercepts that will be the difference here. I see the Tigers doing this early and getting on top of West Coast who are unfamiliar starting as a double digit favourite.

Tim Taranto is expected to return for the Tigers and he will be the important piece in Richmond controlling the run of play with his decision making and execution leading his young troops to a rare victory.

  • Richmond have won 6 of the last 7 matches against West Coast dating back to 2022.
  • Richmond have won 3 of the last 4 matches against West Coast at Optus Stadium.
  • West Coast have conceded 90 points or more in every game this season
  • Tim Taranto was averaging 25+ disposals in his first 5 games of 2026 before going out with concussion against Melbourne.

Head to Head Stats

Richmond won both meetings against West Coast in 2025, backing up their 2-point victory in Round 9 with a 49-point win in Round 19.

The Tigers have now won 8 of the last 10 matches against the Eagles.

West Coast Eagles Form Analysis

Things have gone south again for West Coast after two surprise victories over North Melbourne and Port. Their heavy losses to the Swans, Cats and Dockers where expected but their 101-point drubbing by St Kilda was their worst performance of the year, despite being on the right side of the ARC debacle.

It is clear again that West Coast are not in the same stratosphere as the majority of the league. They struggle to control the ball with the least amount of contested possessions (196.7/G), they allow 17.4 marks per game inside 50 (2nd most in AFL) leading to the most goals per inside 50 at 31.3%.

It is really getting hard to see how West Coast will get better and how their rebuild is actually going to make them a competitive side. It is certainly not happening this season.

Richmond Tigers Form Analysis

Richmond suffered their seventh loss of the season and their sixth straight 40+ margin in their 54-point defeat by Melbourne in Round 7.

The positive was that Tigers were in the match until the final stages of the second quarter and reduced a 21-point deficit to 11 midway through the third before falling flat and letting the Demons kick away quickly in the fourth to blow out the result 126-72.

The Tigers are underperforming in my eyes to the expectation of improvement we had after the end of last season, however, it can come. They are competitive for longer periods and a result will come their way.
