Gibson may have struggled across the clay and grass swings in Europe, going 0-5 against top 50 players, but she's a different beast on the hardcourts of North America and the Aussie has a great opportunity to reach the R16 in Toronto.

The 22-year-old conquered five top 20 players across Indian Wells and Miami earlier in the season and now she's coming off a great straight sets victory over French Open runner-up Maja Chwalinska here in Toronto.

One of those five top 20 players Gibson defeated during the Sunshine Double was Alexandrova and there's no reason why she can't double down in Canada.

Alexandrova is having a shocking season and has a 5-10 record against top 75 players since February - yet she's somehow still ranked inside the top 20. The Russian managed to beat Camila Osario in her Toronto opener, but she's still very much vulnerable and before that match, was last seen retiring in Memphis.

So all things considered, Gibson look good value as the underdog, with a smaller stake on the Aussie prevailing in three.

It's a little perplexing how Alexandrova remains ranked inside the world's top 20 with such a poor record this season, but the Russian still has three WTA 500 runner-up points to defend from last year, so she does face a big rankings drop soon if her level doesn't improve.

Alexandrova has only won 12 matches all year, with three of those coming at the start of the year in Abu Dhabi, where she made another 500 final, but lost again, meaning she's now fallen in her last four WTA 500 title matches.

It appeared as if Alexandrova was slowly picking things up again on grass with a quarter-final in Bad Homburg and third round at Wimbledon, but a return to hardcourt last week in Memphis saw her forced to retire in her opening match while trailing 16-year-old eventual champion Kristina Liutova deep in the deciding set.

The 31-year-old has recovered in time for Toronto, where she managed just her second WTA 1000 win of the year, beating Camila Osario 6-3 7-6(4).

Gibson announced herself on the WTA Tour with a brilliant start to the season, winning 11 of her first 13 matches during the Sunshine Double to break into the world's top 100 for the first time.

The 22-year-old produced a string of eye-catching victories, defeating Alexandrova, Clara Tauson and Jasmine Paolini to reach the Indian Wells quarter-finals as a qualifier before backing it up in Miami by beating Iva Jovic and Naomi Osaka to make the fourth round.

Her momentum slowed on the natural surfaces, with first-round exits at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon, although she did reach the quarter-finals in Nottingham.

Back on hard courts, Gibson suffered a disappointing 6-0, 6-3 defeat to Tatjana Maria in the opening round of Memphis last week, but she has bounced back nicely in Toronto.

Making her main-draw debut at the Canadian Open, the Australian progressed to the second round after Elisabetta Cocciaretto retired while trailing 6-2, 3-2 before Gibson produced a great performance to beat Roland Garros finalist Maja Chwalinska, saving seven of 10 break points and winning the last eight points of the match in a 7-5 6-1 victory.
