Medvedev came away with a comfortable 6-4 6-2 victory in the first round of Doha last week and the third seed will be targeting a similar result here. Medvedev has a strong 11-4 record in Dubai and a 4-1 record in opening rounds. The Russian started the season brightly, but he's stumbled in recent weeks, so this is an important match for Medvedev to regain some momentum. Shang meanwhile was limited to just 16 matches last year as he continues to struggle with injuries and overall physical fitness.

Shang is immensely talented, but he just can't seem to get his body right for sustained periods. He's just too unreliable in physical matches and Medvedev makes you play so many balls. It's just not a good matchup for Shang if Medvedev is in the mood. I'm backing Medvedev to double down on his Doha win and prevail in straights.

After linking up with new coach Thomas Johansson late last year, Medvedev began his resurgent form, winning the Almaty title and making the Paris Masters quarter-finals.

Medvedev continued his good form to begin 2026, taking home the title in Brisbane and reaching the Australian Open fourth round - however, he was blown away by new nemesis Learner Tien.

It's been slim picking since then for Medvedev - he lost to Ugo Humbert in the opening round of Rotterdam and was then eliminated in the second round of Doha by long-term rival Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Medvedev has a strong 11-4 record in Dubai, winning the title in 2023, making the semi-finals in 2024 and the quarter-finals last year.

Shang has the potential to be top 30 and beyond, but constant injuries have held him back since breaking out on tour.

The latest of which was a foot injury, which required surgery and sidelined him for six months last year.

The 21-year-old returned for the second half of last year and it's been a slow grind, with Shang currently ranked outside the world's top 250.

Shang made the quarter-finals of Hong Kong and the second round of the Australian Open last month, but he's had tough draws in the Middle East swing, drawing Medvedev in the opening round of Doha and now Dubai.
