Carlos Alcaraz vs Joao Fonseca Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz and teenage prodigy Joao Fonseca square off for the first time when they clash in the second round of the Miami Masters on Friday night.

You'll be hard-pressed to find a more electric, energetic and lively tennis crowd than the atmosphere that will be generated inside the Hard Rock Stadium on Friday night. Alcaraz is always box office, but the huge Brazilian population in Miami will be out in full force to support their rising star Fonseca, who is starting to generate some momentum after an injury-disrupted start to 2026.

Fonseca pushed Jannik Sinner to two tiebreaks last week in Indian Wells and now he gets another shot at the 'New 2', this time facing Alcaraz, who is coming off his first defeat of the season in Indian Wells to Daniil Medvedev.

I'm probably guilty of 'wanting' a classic match and upset here, but so be it - I'm prepared to lose a small stake on Fonseca. The 19-year-old is a special talent and he showcased that against Sinner. Alcaraz gives you more opportunities and isn't as ruthless, so if Fonseca can get himself deep into sets like he did against Sinner, then I believe he can snatch one. Possibly a tiebreak. Alcaraz lost to David Goffin in his Miami opener last year - he's far from invincible and Fonseca is worth a small punt for the outright win.
  • Fonseca has played five tiebreaks in four previous meetings with top 10 players
  • Fonseca pushed Sinner in a 7-6 7-6 defeat in Indian Wells last week
  • Alcaraz lost to then No. 55 David Goffin in his Miami opening match last year
  • Alcaraz coming off first defeat of 2026 to Medvedev last week in Indian Wells
  • Alcaraz has seen 1+ tiebreak in three of his last four matches
  • Fonseca has covered a +4.5 games line in 18 of his last 19 best-of-three set matches

Alcaraz vs Fonseca Head To Head

This will be the first career meeting between the pair.

Carlos Alcaraz Form Analysis

  • 2026 Record: 16-1
  • ATP Miami Record: 13-4
  • Current Ranking: No. 1
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 1 (2022)

Alcaraz saw his perfect start to the season snapped at Indian Wells last week, but a 16-1 record heading into Miami is still supremely dominant.

The Spaniard of course launched the season by completing the Career Grand Slam at the Australian Open and followed it up by securing the silverware in Doha at the 500 tournament.

Alcaraz was moving through the draw nicely last week in the desert, but he ran into a resurgent Daniil Medvedev in the semi-finals, going down 6-3 7-6.

The 22-year-old won the Miami title as a teenager back in 2022, but hasn't reigned supreme since, falling to Grigor Dimitrov in the 2024 quarter-finals before last year's shock opening loss to Goffin.

Joao Fonseca Form Analysis

  • 2026 Record: 5-4
  • ATP Miami Record: 3-1
  • Current Ranking: No. 39
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 24 (Nov 2025)

It's a huge month for Fonseca - he's regained his best tennis after a back injury and is set to square off with a member of the top two for the second straight tournament.

Fonseca lit up Indian Wells with impressive victories over Raphael Collignon, Karen Khachanov and Tommy Paul before giving Sinner a huge scare in the R16, ultimately going down in a pair of tiebreaks.

Not to be deterred, the 19-year-old bounce back in Miami and registered a solid opening round win over the dangerous Fabian Marozsan, prevailing 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 with 12 aces and 22 winners.

Now, Fonseca gets another shot at a top player - this time, the World No. 1.

“I'm excited for sure,” said Fonseca.
“I don’t know about other players, but I look forward to playing against the top players. I played against Jannik last tournament, and now I’m playing against Carlos.
"It’s just a super experience, so I’m looking forward to it for sure and it’s going to be a great match. Hopefully I can get the win.”

Fonseca's level is good enough to compete with Alcaraz and make this competitive - I think he can snatch a set and force a tiebreak.
