Shelton has surged back into top form after securing the title in Munich last week, while Prizmic continues to rise up the rankings and is actually undefeated in completed Masters 1000 matches throughout his young career (including qualifying).

It sets up what promises to be an entertaining showdown in the Spanish capital. With both players confident and in good form, I think this will be a close contest.

Regular readers of our tennis content at bets.com.au will know I love a tiebreak bet involving Shelton. I especially love taking them in his opening round matches, where Shelton is often happy to ease his way into the tournament and doesn't go all out in return games. Prizmic has also played a decent number of tiebreaks in recent outings.

After a recent difficult period, Shelton has regained some of his best form and comes into Madrid just one spot off his career-high ranking of No. 5.

Shelton started the year strongly, making another Australian Open quarter-final before taking the 500 title in Dallas.

However, the American was struck down by illness and injury problems and managed just one win across his next three tournaments at Indian Wells, Miami and Houston, suffering surprise defeats to the likes of Alexander Shevchenko and Thiago Agustin Tirante.

Shelton bounced back brilliantly on the clay of Munich last week, defeating the likes of Joao Fonseca and Flavio Cobolli to secure his second 500 title of the season.

Prizmic’s rise has taken slightly longer than first anticipated due to injury setbacks, but he has now broken into the top 100 in the opening months of 2026 and looks well placed to climb towards the top 50 in the near future.

Still only 20, the Croatian possesses a high-level baseline game that should translate particularly well on clay and slower hard courts, where his consistency and resilience make him difficult to break down.

He arrives in strong form, winning 16 of his last 21 matches across all levels, highlighted by a run to the Monza Challenger final, where he fell just short against Raphael Collignon.

Prizmic has also proven himself at Masters 1000 level, improving to 6-0 in completed matches during Madrid qualifying and his opening round.

He battled past Chris O’Connell in a three-set tiebreak contest, 7-6(9) 6-7(5) 7-6(3), before backing it up with a composed 6-3 6-2 win over Zsombor Piros to secure his place in the main draw. Prizmic then registered a fairly routine 6-3 6-4 victory over former Madrid finalist Matteo Berrettini to move into the second round.
