The Australia Cup clash between Western Sydney Wanderers and Melbourne Victory is shaping up to be a closely contested battle. With both teams in the midst of transition under new management, the Wanderers are slight home outsiders. Despite Melbourne Victory’s historical success, the article predicts a tight match with Under 2.5 goals. Recent head-to-heads and current form hint at a tight, defensively contested fixture, making the Wanderers a value pick in front of a home crowd.

Western Sydney Wanderers vs Melbourne Victory Australia Cup Tips & Prediction

These early Australia Cup matches are still somewhat of a lottery so I'm following the value and backing the Western Sydney Wanderers as home outsiders against Melbourne Victory in a game that features Under 2.5 goals.

Can't really make a case for Victory as away favourites, so I'm going to take a stab with the Wanderers in front of what should be a fiery atmosphere at Marconi Stadium.

Western Sydney should be up and about for this - they're coming off a dismal A-League season where they finished anchored to the bottom of the ladder, with Ufuk Talay coming in to take charge.

After overcoming Tigers FC 2-0 in their R32 match, the Wanderers enjoyed a great experience facing Premier League giants Chelsea last week - and they played their part in an extremely entertaining game, going down 6-4.

So the Wanderers should be a bit more battle-hardened than their opponents, with Victory easing past Tasmanian NPL side Kingsborough 4-0 in their R32. Wanderers have never won the Australia Cup and this is as good a time as any, with so many A-League clubs already eliminated.
  • Under 2.5 goals has landed in the last two meetings
  • Wanderers have won five of their last eight home games vs Victory

These two teams have split their last four meetings at two wins apiece.

WS Wanderers Form Analysis

The Wanderers finished bottom of the pile in the A-League last term, winning just five games.

Ufuk Talay has stepped in as new manager, with the Wanderers getting off the mark with a 2-0 win over Tigers FC in the Australia Cup R32.

Two second-half goals in the space of five minutes from new signing Miguel Di Pizio and striker Brandon Borrello earned Western Sydney the win.

The Wanderers then backed up with a good showing against Chelsea in last week's Sydney Super Cup friendly. Anthony Pantazopoulos, Aydan Hammond, Dylan Scicluna, and Awan Lual all found the back of the net as the Wanderers showcased some encouraging signs in attack.

Melbourne Victory Form Analysis

Victory are two-time Australia Cup champions and finished runner-up in 2024.

They've already eclipsed last year's showing after they suffered a 'Cupset' against Olympic Kingsway.

Giovanni Savarese is the new man in charge and he oversaw a routine 4-0 win for Victory over Kingsborough in the Round of 32.

Philipp Ziereis, Matthew Grimaldi, Clarismario Santos, and Keegan Jelacic all got on the scoresheet for Victory.
