Rosehill kickstarts the Sydney metropolitan racing season with a competitive 10-race program this Saturday, August 1. The track is in Soft 5 condition with potential showers. Standout bets include Columbus (Race 3) and Tarzing (Race 7) as prime win selections, while Nimble Star (Race 2) and Annie's Rose (Race 10) are highlighted as value each-way options due to favorable draws and strong trial form. Bettors are advised to keep an eye on track conditions and late market moves before finalizing wagers.

TAB Highway Handicap Tips (Race 2)

Rosehill Value Bet - Race 2 No. 6 Nimble Star

There is some depth to Saturday's Highway Handicap, with the unbeaten Sobek aiming for four straight, while Oh Arthur is also here, having landed the cash for us first-up at a big price, and the runner-up franked that form on Thursday.

At much longer odds is Nimble Star, a four-year-old who lost the rider on debut in January last year before winning his next three starts, and while he hasn't tasted victory for a year, he's still been mostly competitive.

Nothing has gone right in four Highway attempts, first covering ground when third at Randwick in September before drawing wide via an end-of-preparation run on the seven-day turnaround, then drawing out again when a close third at Wyong first-up in January.

A tough run followed that at Randwick when racing three-wide throughout before his most recent Rosehill resumption on July 4, where he again drew wide, covered ground and stuck on bravely in a three-length defeat.

Nimble Star finally gets a favourable draw and could enjoy a soft run just behind a few of those market fancies up front, making him well worth an each-way play at a long price.

Rosehill Best Bet - Race 3 No. 2 Columbus

Veteran trainer Les Bridge may have another nice one on his hands in Columbus, a lightly raced four-year-old still learning the caper, but one who put a BM64 field to the sword when resuming as an odds-on favourite at Newcastle on July 14.

With that early-season campaign behind him and now back-to-back wins on the board, he looks ready to work his way through the grades.

The son of Dundeel is from a superb family, with the Arrowfield-bred and owned gelding closely related to four-time Group 1 winner and champion stallion Redoute's Choice, Group 1 winner Manhattan Rain and three-time Group 1-winning sprinter Shoals.

His first campaign opened with an unlucky third at Newcastle behind Decorum, who won his first two starts this year before contesting the Randwick Guineas, before Columbus atoned for a second-start defeat with a Hawkesbury maiden victory.

James McDonald takes back the reins, having partnered Columbus to that October 16 breakthrough, and with the extra 100m to suit, he can claim a first metropolitan success.

Congratulations Chris Waller Handicap Tips (Race 6)

Rosehill Favourite - Race 6 No. 4 Enviable

She was spelled after failing in her only two-year-old appearance when contesting a Group 3 in March last year, and while still lacking strength throughout her second campaign, the ability was evident in some handy company.

That included a maiden third behind subsequent Group 1 winner Attica before a fourth in the Group 1 Flight Stakes and then a Group 2 second on Cox Plate Day.

That event was won by the handy Salty Pearl, who returned the following preparation with a dominant Caulfield victory before placing at Group 1 level during the Sydney Autumn Carnival.

Connections were looking for a kill first-up this campaign and got exactly that when the daughter of Frankel resumed at Newcastle on July 14 with a soft maiden victory.

This is a sharp rise in grade to Benchmark 78 company, but against her own sex in what doesn't look a particularly strong city affair, Enviable is contesting this at the right time.

Rosehill Next Best Bet - Race 7 No. 8 Tarzing

Perhaps there was a slight setback with Tarzing, having not raced since his second-up victory on June 27 after being scratched a few times, although he appeared to move well in a tick-over trial on July 24.

James McDonald takes the reins aboard the talented Chris Waller-trained galloper, who has won three of five starts, with thirds in his only defeats.

He was unlucky via the June 13 resumption before returning a fortnight later to account for the handy Big Papa, who had bolted in at his previous start in stronger grade.

While drawn wide, the world's best rider has the class to overcome that, and he has plenty of options aboard a versatile horse.

The son of Tarzino remains the least exposed galloper in the field with arguably the most upside, and while he shapes as a middle-distance horse in time, staying at 1400m on the fresh side looks ideal.

Congratulations James McDonald Handicap Tips (Race 10)

Rosehill Roughie - Race 10 No. 14 Annie's Rose

The April 18 failure at Randwick can be forgiven, with Annie's Rose pulling up lame and subsequently being spelled, while the daughter of Sepoy has impressed via a July 22 trial leading into Saturday's resumption.

She did take out a Rosehill Midway on March 28 before that last-start miss, and it could simply be a case of catching this mare on the fresh side.

From her four victories, two have come first-up, including a triumph over the handy Ten Commandments, while her third win and first for the Kristen Buchanan stable came when a month between runs early last year, with her most recent Rosehill success coming after seven weeks between starts.

Also, despite that latest victory coming over 1300m, that distance is probably as far as she wants, with jockey Craig Williams reporting a colder ride over sprint trips is when she's at her most effective, and her record certainly reflects that.

She's not necessarily the easiest mare to catch, but certainly talented enough to measure up here, and at a long price, the first emergency is well worth including should she gain a start.
