Doomben Roughie - Race 5 No. 12 Ten Good Reasons
While the November resumption at Eagle Farm was a sound one in third, a slow recovery was noted after his second-up performance a fortnight later and the preparation never really got back on track for the Gary Duncan-trained galloper, who rounded out his campaign in a strong Class 3 at Eagle Farm on January 3.
Three-kilogram claimer Rob Thorburn has the reins for Saturday's return assignment after partnering the gelding in a Sunshine Coast trial on July 21, when he was allowed to find his feet at the rear of the field before closing strongly to just miss over 1000m.
Ten Good Reasons showed good ability as a late three-year-old, which included a Saturday victory at Doomben 12 months ago.
While he generally likes to get back when drawn wide, we did see him take up a position the only time he drew kindly during his last campaign.
So, although barrier one could prove a little tricky if they elect to ride him negatively, a neutral steer should have him within striking distance to produce his turn of foot late in an open contest.
National Jockey's Trust F&M Class 3 Tips (Race 6)
Doomben Best Bet - Race 6 No. 1 Grinzinger Champ
The market may take her on because of the sharp rise in weight from 54.5kg to 60kg, however Grinzinger Champ is still on the up and finds a suitable set weights contest against her own sex that lacks depth.
The daughter of Wootton Bassett caught the eye when charging home to score here on July 18 after being forced to settle further back than connections would have liked from a wide barrier before comfortably picking up Spirit Of Barty.
The second favourite does receive a handy weight swing this time, but she also had every chance from a perfect run in transit to beat Grinzinger Champ in that latest clash.
The trials were encouraging leading into her stable debut at Eagle Farm, where she was ridden conservatively before finishing off well for fourth in a race won by Sword Of Legacy, who franked the form with a Sydney victory at her next appearance.
Gate five is a tick and class can see Grinzinger Champ bring up back-to-back victories.
XXXX Open Handicap Tips (Race 8)
Doomben Value Bet - Race 8 No. 5 Cosmic Fire
A Listed winner during the 2025 Brisbane Winter Carnival, Cosmic Fire resumed in December with a well-held third over this track-and-trip in a Group 3 won by Caballus, who claimed the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap two starts later.
Although disappointing at his following start before a spell, there were genuine excuses and a slight recovery was detected afterwards, suggesting the performance was too bad to be true.
He looked the part through two pleasing trial wins in June before returning in the Listed Ramornie Handicap on July 15.
A wide barrier proved costly there, where he settled back in a leader-dominated race before finishing off well into sixth.
They have more options this time from barrier four with Cejay Graham likely to settle him much closer to the speed, while the drop back to 1100m is no negative given his outstanding record at the trip.
Ladbrokes Switch BM85 Handicap Tips (Race 9)
Doomben Next Best Bet - Race 9 No. 3 Ouroboros
It's getting close to D-Day for Ouroboros, although his only time out of the placings in five runs this preparation came in Listed company on the Gold Coast second-up.
He has responded with three subsequent placings, including a narrow third over this course and distance carrying the same weight on June 3 before being grabbed late after setting the speed on Ipswich Cup Day.
Arguably his best performance of the campaign came in the Rockhampton Newmarket last start, where Ouroboros was forced to do plenty of work to find the lead before sticking on bravely in the long straight.
The setup looks much kinder here, with Boris Thornton expected to find the front comfortably and dictate affairs on the speed.
A roughie to include in the quaddie and wider exotics is Noble Conqueror, whose two July trials have been much better than they read, and while his previous preparation was over further, he can produce a good fresh performance.
