As the Supercars Championship heads to Townsville, all eyes are on Broc Feeney, the current Sprint Cup leader. Despite his recent successes, Townsville's unpredictable nature poses a challenge for him. Cam Waters, with a strong track record on street circuits, aims to capitalize on his strengths and reduce Feeney's lead. The inclusion of a new Friday sprint race format adds strategic depth. While Feeney is favored, Waters and others like Matt Payne are anticipated to make an impact, setting the stage for an exciting race filled with strategic plays and intense competition.

2025 Supercars Townsville 500 Preview & Tips

As the 2025 Repco Supercars Championship heads to Townsville for the NTI Townsville 500 from July 11–13, Broc Feeney leads the Sprint Cup standings with a 183-point advantage, having secured seven wins in the last nine races.

Despite his dominance, Feeney has yet to clinch a main game victory in Townsville, a track known for its unpredictability and potential to disrupt championship trajectories.

Cam Waters, trailing by 320 points, remains a formidable contender on street circuits, boasting three Townsville wins, including a memorable duel against Chaz Mostert last year. His performance this weekend could be pivotal in reasserting his title aspirations.

Will Brown, returning from a challenging NASCAR stint, aims to rebound and close the gap to Feeney.

The weekend introduces a new format with a Friday sprint race, adding strategic complexity as teams navigate practice, qualifying, and racing on the same day. With drivers from eighth to eighteenth separated by just 309 points, the battle for Finals qualification intensifies, making Townsville a critical juncture in the season.

Supercars Townsville 500 Qualifying Best Bet

Championship leader Broc Feeney cleaned out the field in Darwin with three pole positions and three race wins and is the clear favourite for pole and victory in Friday’s sprint race in Townsville.

However, Feeney is arguable not as clinical as other drivers when it comes to street circuits, especially comparing him to Cam Waters, who often does his best work away from fulltime tracks.

It is now or never for Waters in the championship race and he will lean on his form over the last couple of years, particularly in qualifying, putting his Mustang in the best possible position to steal some points back from Feeney in the Sprint Cup.

Waters has two pole positions a second and a third in qualifying over the last two years in Townsville and he will add to that pole count on Friday.

The question will be if Cam Waters claims pole, can he stay in front?

It is more important than ever to be as far up on the grid as you can from the start with the field much tighter than it has been over the last few rounds on permanent racing tracks.

However, there are possibilities to pass it is difficult to see anyone keeping Feeney from a good crack at the lead. That being said, the championship leader had two seventh place finishes in the Townsville 500 last season with Red Bull Racing having a miserable weekend.

I am more inclined to stick with Waters for the win and also have a dabble on Penrite Racing’s Matt Payne, who also pinched a win last year in North Queensland.

Verdict

Cam Waters is predicted to have a bounce-back weekend and Matt Payne to challenge for another win.
