The 10th edition of the Men’s T20 World Cup will unfold in India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8, featuring 20 nations and 55 matches of wicket-rattling, rope-clearing limited overs cricket action.

2026 T20 World Cup Groups

Teams are split into four groups of five, with the top two qualifiers from each progressing to the Super 8 stage.

The Super 8 teams are split into two groups for another set of round-robin encounters, followed by two semis and the World Cup final to be hosted in Ahmedabad or Colombo.

Group A: India, Pakistan, United States, Netherlands, Namibia
Group B: Australia, Sri Lanka, Ireland, Zimbabwe, Oman
Group C: England, West Indies, Scotland, Nepal, Italy

The T20 World Cup Contenders

As the defending champions, co-hosts and number one-ranked T20I nation, India have been installed as resounding favourites to carry off the trophy for the third time. India’s triumph in Barbados in 2024 ended a lengthy period of World Cup underachievement for the perpetual heavyweights.

But India approach the 2026 edition minus two legends: 2024 final player of the match Virat Kohli and their top runscorer in that tournament, Rohit Sharma, who both retired from T20I cricket after guiding the team to World Cup glory.

Suryakamar Yadav will lead a squad headlined by batters Abhishek Sharma and Tilka Varma (first and third in the T20I batting rankings), top-ranked bowler Varun Chakaravarthy, and veterans Kuldeep Yadav, Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah.

A trio of teams are jostling for the second line of betting: 2021 champions Australia, 2022 winners England and perennial World Cup hard-luck story South Africa, the 2024 runners-up.

Australia have named a 15-man squad featuring 10 players over the age of 30 – and seven members of the line-up that defeated India in the 2023 ODI World Cup final in Ahmedabad.

Mitch Marsh skippers a team boasting cult hero and all-format superstar Travis Head, BBL greats Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell, dynamic keeper Josh Inglis, and bowling trump cards Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Adam Zampa.

Smarting from another Ashes failure, Harry Brook-led England will rely heavily on limited-overs specialists Jos Buttler, Phil Salt – two of the top four batsman in the T20I rankings - and Adil Rashid. Test sensation Jacob Bethell shapes as a potential World Cup breakout star.

Australia lost a home series to India 2-1 in November (two matches were washed out) and will warm up for the World Cup with three matches against Pakistan.

England’s last T20 foray was a rain-ruined series in New Zealand in October, while they take on Sri Lanka in a warm-up rubber.

South Africa’s prospects of going one better than last time took a knock via a 4-1 T20I series loss in India in December, though keeper-batsman Quinton de Kock was in blistering touch.

Captain Aiden Markram, David Miller and Kagiso Rabada provide the Proteas with a sound base of world-class experience.

T20 World Cup Dark Horses

New Zealand bombed out in the group stage in 2024 after bookending their 2021 runner-up showing with semifinal appearances in 2016 and 2022.

But the Black Caps represent arguably the best value in this World Cup market, buoyed by their historic, Daryl Mitchell- and Glenn Phillips-inspired ODI series victory in India this month.

A five-match T20 series against India provides another gilt-edged opportunity to hit the tournament with a head of steam, with captain Mitch Santner, Devon Conway Rachin Ravindra, Jacob Duffy and Perth Scorchers star Finn Allen providing the Kiwi outfit with excellent balance.

Pakistan, winners in 2009 and runners-up in 2022, can’t be underestimated with top-order batter Sahibzada Farhan and spinner Abrar Ahmed among the better international performers in the format of late - though leading BBL15 wicket-taker Haris Rauf’s axing is a blow.

The enigmatic West Indies are two-time winners (2012 and 2016) but appear just as likely to fail to make it out of a group including England and Bangladesh ($126) as they are to go deep.

Afghanistan, led by Rashid Khan, were shock semifinalists in 2024 after carving out momentous wins over New Zealand and Australia, while co-hosts Sri Lanka are favoured to go through to the Super 8s from Group B with Australia.

India are hard to go past on home soil, but the World Cup-hardened Australian squad will be galvanised by earning ODI supremacy on the subcontinent three years ago.

New Zealand are the smokies in the mix based on recent form and past World Cup efforts, with England the best-placed team to join them in the semis.
