The Hobart Hurricanes are set to face the Perth Scorchers in a New Year's Day clash in the Big Bash League. Historically, Hobart has the edge, having won the last two matches against Perth and enjoying a stable home form. The Hurricanes are slightly favored due to their robust performance at Bellerive Oval and powerful batting lineup led by Ben McDermott, who averages 41.25 runs. Despite Tim David's injury, the Hurricanes remain strong contenders. Perth, however, needs to overcome away inconsistencies and bolster their bowling to counter Hobart effectively.

Hobart Hurricanes vs Perth Scorchers Big Bash League Expert Tips

A top 4 battle for New Year’s Day as the Hobart Hurricanes host the Perth Scorchers in their second matchup of the season.

Hobart won by 4 wickets with 3 balls remaining back on Boxing Day in Perth but it wasn’t all joy with Tim David suffering a hamstring injury. Hobart’s spin bowling was the key to victory but a different wicket will present different opportunities for both teams this time around.

Despite the injury to David, the defending Champions Hobart are still the slight favourites to take the victory on their home oval. They have won two in a row against Perth as well as 3 of the last 5. They are 2-0 in Tasmania this year and have also won both bat flips at home.

The Scorchers road averages are inflated from the massive score they put up in Brisbane last week and while they still have the roster to mount a respectable total with the bat, they have been found out a few times already this season. Their bowling attack also struggled to make early inroads in the top order last time around which could prove costly if the trend continues.

Stick with the home team and defending Champs. Hobart to win and cover the short line -1.5 wickets/-0.5 runs. Take Ben McDermott over 23.5 runs and Hobart to hit over 6.5 sixes in the match.

  • Hobart have won two in a row against Perth and have won 9 straight games at Bellerive Oval.
  • Ben McDermott is averaging 41.25 runs per game in 5 matches this season with a high score of 69.
  • Hobart average 8.2 sixes at Bellerive Oval over their last 9 games played there.
  • The Scorchers are allowing 8.4 sixes per game to their opponents.

Hobart Hurricanes Form

The Hurricanes sit 2nd in the standings with a 4-1 record, having played the most games over the first couple of weeks of competition. Their most recent outing was a 4 wicket win over the Melbourne Renegades on Monday with 6 balls remaining.

Hobart won the bat flip and sent the Renegades into bat, restricting them to a total of 162 runs, taking 9 wickets in the process. They still did give up 14 fours and 6 sixes in the game.

Nathan Ellis was the pick of the bowlers, taking 3 wickets from 4 overs at a 7.5 run rate. With the willow, it was again Matt Wade who top scored at number 6 with 43 runs off 20 balls. The top order all made starts, Tim Ward reaching 30 runs. The team hit just 10 fours but also 10 sixes.

Perth Scorchers Form

Perth looked a little shaky in their start against the Thunder on Tuesday but Cooper Connolly steadied the ship with 28 runs before captain Ashton Turner produced a brilliant 99 not out off 41 balls to set a 8/202 run chase.

It wasn’t until the 7th over that the Scorchers broke through for their first wicket but once the top three were out it was one way traffic, rolling the Thunder for 131 runs in just 17.3 overs. Joel Paris, Brody Couch, Aaron Hardie and Cooper Connolly all took 2 wickets while keeping their run rates below 10.

The Scorchers now move up to 3rd in the standings with a superior run rate over the Heat.
