AFL 2024 Team Previews, Predictions & Player Movement: Fremantle Dockers

Where they finish: 12th in the AFL in 2024

Losing players from your starting squad is never easy, when those players are contributing to the already minimal scoring it gets even harder. Fremantle have a way to go before their list is good enough to contend with the likes of Collingwood, Brisbane and Melbourne, but they have the pieces to be able to continue to develop and be in the discussion for a spot in that 7th-12th bracket.

What’s to like

The Dockers young core is one of the best in the league. Brayshaw, Serong, Cox, Darcy & Young are all very good players and will continue to develop their games. Freo’s ruck duo of Sean Darcy & Luke Jackson saw the team be one of only 4 in the AFL to have over 1000 hitouts in the 2023 season.

The Dockers strengths lay with their defence and pressure. In 2023 they were top 5 in Opposition Inside 50’s, Opp Contested Possessions & Opp Marks. If they can continue to hold that pressure whilst adding to their own scoring tally they will have the chance to surge up the rankings.

What’s NOT to like

You can have all the defensive pressure in the world, but if you can’t score you won’t win games. Fremantle have struggled for years with consistency in their forward line. Losing Lachie Schulz who was the team’s 2nd best goalscorer in 2023 will set the team further back on the scoring front.

Freo have the makings to be an improved team but have yet to show they are actually improving, this means they are still a few years off being in their premiership window which seems to be pushed back for every off-season.
