As Ugo Humbert and Alexei Popyrin prepare to face off in the Monte Carlo Masters' first round, Popyrin is looking to capitalize on a difficult start to the year. Although Humbert boasts an impressive record early in this season, his clay court struggles offer Popyrin a favorable opportunity. Their head-to-head stands tied at 1-1, with Popyrin previously claiming victory on clay at the French Open. Betting insights suggest backing Popyrin with a +2.5 head start and a possible three-set win, making the Aussie a worthy pick.

Ugo Humbert vs Alexei Popyrin Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

Alexei Popyrin has a great opportunity to improve on what has been a difficult start to the season when he comes up against Ugo Humbert in the first round of the Monte Carlo Masters on Tuesday.

A combination of niggling injuries and increased expectation has contributed to Popyrin winning just two matches so far in 2025, but the Aussie enjoys playing on clay and this looks a favourable matchup.

Humbert is anything but a natural clay courter with his flat game and he still holds a negative 48-52 career record on the surface, which is insane for a top 20 player. The Frenchman has lost seven of his last nine matches on the surface and he's also traditionally struggled in Masters 1000 events throughout his career. Popyrin prevailed when they met back at the 2019 French Open and is a much more accomplished player today. I'm backing the Aussie to cover and there's more value in a three-set victory.

Head To Head

Currently locked at 1-1. As mentioned, Popyrin won in four sets when they met at the 2019 French Open, while Humbert returned serve with a routine 6-3 6-2 victory in Davis Cup last year.

Ugo Humbert Form

Humbert has compiled a 11-5 record on the season coming into this tournament.

The Frenchman enjoyed a successful start to the year, making the fourth round of the Australian Open and winning his seventh ATP title indoors in Marseille - conditions in which he thrives.

However, Humbert has struggled over the last month or so, losing three of his last four matches. The 26-year-old lost his second match in Indian Wells to eventual runner-up Holger Rune, while he had the misfortune of running into Joao Fonseca in a carnival-like atmosphere in his Miami opener.

Surprisingly, Humbert made the Monte Carlo quarter-finals last year, which was the first time in four attempts he'd won a match at the tournament.

Alexei Popyrin Form

Popyrin has struggled to open the season, arriving in Monte Carlo with a 2-7 record and failing to beat a player ranked inside the top 50.

Niggling injuries contributed to Popyrin failing to win a match during the Australian summer, with the Aussie finally claiming his first win of 2025 in Dubai - but that was against Hady Habib, who is ranked outside the top 175.

Popyrin registered a solid win over the in-form Zizou Bergs in his Indian Wells opener, but he failed to build on that momentum, losing his next two matches in three sets to Marcos Giron and Roman Safiullin.

The World No. 27 also played well in Monte-Carlo last season, beating Corentin Moutet and Andrey Rublev before going down to compatriot Alex de Minaur in the R16.

Verdict

I'm keen to take a chance on Popyrin in this matchup.

Humbert has really struggled on clay throughout his career, while Popyrin has played well on this surface. The Aussie's form has to turn at some stage and this looks like a great chance - backing Pop with a +3.5 head start and in three.
