Fritz has recaptured his best form over the last couple of months, winning 20 of his last 24 matches and cementing himself in the world's top four. It's been an extremely important stretch for Fritz, who is defending US Open final points over the coming month. The American was untroubled in his Cincinnati opener and will be hoping for smooth progress into the R16 against Sonego, who he has beaten in five of their seven previous meetings.
Sonego is capable of some brilliant tennis, but the Italian's problem is consistently producing that level from week to week and sometimes over the course of a match. I think Sonego can push this match over 21.5 total games and he may even snatch a set, but Fritz has been locked in since June and I can't see him losing an important match like this.

Fritz leads 5-2, but all seven matches have either featured at least one tiebreak or seen both players win a set. Fritz was a 7-6 6-3 winner in their most-recent clash in the second round of Miami earlier this season.

Fritz comes into this showdown with a 37-14 record on the season, with 20 of those victories coming since the start of June.
The American struggled with his form and some niggling injuries at the start of the year, but he found his best tennis when stepping onto the grass.
Indeed, Fritz has gone 20-4 since June, winning two ATP titles in Stuttgart and Eastbourne, along with reaching the Wimbledon semi-finals.
Fritz went down to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the quarter-finals of Washington before advancing to the Toronto Masters semi-finals last week, where he was defeated by compatriot Ben Shelton.
The 27-year-old got back into the swing of things in his Cincinnati opener against Emilio Nava, winning 75 per cent of points on serve in a routine 6-4 6-4 victory.
Lorenzo Sonego Form
It hasn't been a great season for Sonego, who comes into this encounter with a negative 16-19 record and down at No. 36 in the world.
Seven of those wins have come at Grand Slam level, which has kept Sonego's ranking inside the top 40, with the Italian reaching the quarter-finals at the Australian Open and fourth round at Wimbledon, losing on both occasions to Shelton.
In fact, those two tournaments are the only times in 2025 that Sonego has been able to win back-to-back completed matches.
He'll have a tough assignment to add to that in Cincinnati after notching up a solid 6-3 7-6 win over Zizou Bergs in his opener. Sonego also competed in Toronto last week, going down to Andrey Rublev in three sets in the third round.
