Stefanos Tsitsipas launches his Monte Carlo Masters title defense by facing Jordan Thompson. Having won this title three out of the last four times, Tsitsipas is expected to excel on a surface he's comfortable with, despite a recent dip in form. Thompson, who struggles on clay, will face a tough challenge against Tsitsipas. The Greek's strong clay-court performance history and favorable head-to-head stats make him the expected victor in this matchup. Fans can stream the match live to witness Tsitsipas's journey in defending his title.

While Tsitsipas has struggled for his best tennis over the last few years and taken a slight tumble down the rankings, the Greek has consistently managed to find success in Monte Carlo. Indeed, Tsitsipas has won the Monte Carlo title in three of the last four editions of the tournament, beating the likes of Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev along the way in 2024.

This looms as a favourable opening matchup for Tsitsipas to sink his teeth into the tournament. Thompson, by his own admission, despises clay and he's never won a single set in four previous meetings with top 10 players on the surface. The Aussie did claim a rare win in a Masters 1000 clay tournament in his Monte Carlo opener against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, but the big-serving Frenchman can lose to anyone on his day. Anything other than a routine win for Tsitsipas would be a surprise here.

Head To Head

Tsitsipas has won three of the four previous meetings between the pair, but this will be their first encounter on clay.

Stefanos Tsitsipas Form

Tsitsipas arrives in Monte Carlo with a 11-6 record on the season.

It's been another underwhelming last 12 months for Tsitsipas, but he will be hoping a switch to European clay will spark a return to some of his best tennis.

Tsitsipas won 22 of his 28 matches on European clay last year, including winning the Monte Carlo title and making the final in Barcelona in back-to-back weeks, which means he's defending a truckload of points over the next fortnight.

The Greek won his 12th career title earlier this year in Dubai, but hasn't really built on that triumph, going out in the R16 of Indian Wells to Holger Rune and the R32 of Miami to Seb Korda.

Jordan Thompson Form

Thompson is currently 7-5 for the season following his career-best year in 2024, where he broke into the top 30 for the first time and secured multiple top 10 victories, along with a maiden ATP title in Los Cabos.

However, injury problems derailed Thompson's start to 2025 and now he finds himself in the difficult position of needing to pick up points and wins on European clay in order to further improve his ranking.

The Aussie is a poor 16-31 on clay at tour-level throughout his career and admits he's basically waiting for the grass swing over the coming months.

Thompson did however register a valuable win with a favourable draw in his Monte Carlo opener, defeating Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard 6-3 6-4.

Verdict

Thompson has struggled on clay throughout his career, losing basically double the amount of matches he's won on the surface.

Tsitsipas thrives in these slow Monte Carlo conditions, so the Greek shouldn't have any trouble in progressing to the third round here.
