Holger Rune targets the Cincinnati Masters semi-finals for the second year in a row when he meets qualifier Terence Atmane in the quarters on Thursday night.

It's been an extraordinary tournament for Atmane, who has become the first qualifier in two years to reach the quarter-finals of a Masters 1000 event. The 23-year-old will make his debut in the top 100 after this tournament after beginning the event at No. 136 in the world. Atmane has taken out the likes of Joao Fonseca, Flavio Cobolli and fourth seed Taylor Fritz in the main draw, putting together an incredible breakout tournament at tour level. However, it most likely ends here.
Rune admittedly hasn't been setting the world on fire lately, but he has performed very strongly at Masters 1000 level in his short career, winning Paris in 2022 and making three further finals. The Dane made the semi-finals of Cincinnati last year and has a great opportunity to return to the final four - I don't think he lets it slip.

Rune comes into this contest with a 27-15 record on the season, remaining inside the top 10 at No. 9 in the world.
The Dane has shown glimpses throughout 2025 of why many tipped him to rule the tennis world alongside the likes of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz for the next decade - he beat Alcaraz to win the ATP 500 event in Barcelona and was also a runner-up at Indian Wells. Rune was also the only player to take a set off Sinner at the Australian Open.
However, consistency has been a real issue for Rune and he struggles to perform his best tennis from week to week.
The 22-year-old lost to Alexei Popyrin in the Toronto Masters R16 last week in three sets and has advanced one stage further in Cincinnati, defeating Roman Safiullin and Alex Michelsen before Frances Tiafoe retired after one set in their R16 clash.
Terence Atmane Form
Atmane had only won one tour-level match in 2025 before arriving in Cincinnati - but his career and life has changed in the space of a week.
The 23-year-old successfully qualified for the main draw with wins over a pair of Aussies in Li Tu and Omar Jasika before going on this spectacular run.
The Frenchman began his main draw with a victory over Yoshihito Nishioka before taking out the in-form Flavio Cobolli and teenage sensation Joao Fonseca.
However, the best was yet to come as Atmane came from a set down to conquer fourth seed Taylor Fritz 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 to reach his first Masters 1000 quarter-final and securing a top 100 ranking for the first time.
Atmane won 83 per cent of his first serve points as he also became the lowest-ranked Cincinnati quarter-finalist since Borna Coric won the title in 2022.

Verdict
Atmane has put together a brilliant tournament, but it's so tough for these qualifiers to continue these sorts of runs, especially after a milestone top four win in the previous round.
Rune is far from reliable, but I'll back the Dane to get this done in straights given the circumstances.
