It's the top seed up against a former champion as Felix Auger-Aliassime and Daniil Medvedev square off in the Dubai Tennis Championships semi-finals on Friday.
Auger-Aliassime is the top seed at a tournament bigger than 250 level for the first time this week in Dubai and he's justified that status, advancing into the semi-finals without dropping a single set. Meanwhile, Medvedev has also been dominant, with the 2023 Dubai champion demolishing all of his opponents, not dropping more than three games in six total sets.
It promises to be an entertaining showdown, but I've got to give the edge to Medvedev. He's won seven of the eight previous completed matches between the pair, with Auger-Aliassime's lone victory coming on clay at the Paris Olympics - Medvedev's worst surface.
With Medvedev backing playing well and being a ball machine from the back of the court, he should be able to outlast the Canadian in the majority of baseline exchanges. If this were indoors, Felix would probably be considered favourite, but in these conditions, Medvedev clearly loves this matchup and is backed to progress into a second Dubai final.

It was a slow start to the season as Auger-Aliassime only won one match in January, including a first round Australian Open exit via retirement.
However, the Canadian has more than made up for it in February, compiling an 11-1 record this month, winning the title in Montpellier, finishing runner-up in Rotterdam and now making the semi-finals in Dubai.
Auger-Aliassime hasn't dropped a set all week, defeating Zhizhen Zhang (6-3 7-6), Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard 6-4 6-4 and Jiri Lehecka 6-3 7-6.
The top seed is looking forward to challenging himself against Medvedev in the final four.
“We have very different game styles,” said Auger-Aliassime.
“I’m going to try to come forward, he will try and make me miss. We’ll see who gets the better of the game plan. He’s had the better of me… It took me seven or eight times before beating him.”

It's been a solid start to the season for Medvedev, who will be hoping to reclaim a spot inside the top 10 over the next month or so.
Medvedev launched the year with a 22nd career title in Brisbane, but was knocked out in the fourth round of the Australian Open by Learner Tien, who has had his number over the last 12 months.
The Russian didn't play his best tennis in first and second round exits at Rotterdam and Doha respectively, but he's back to business here in Dubai.
Medvedev has crushed everyone in his path to the semi-finals, including Juncheng Shang 6-1 6-3, Stan Wawrinka 6-2 6-3 and Jenson Brooksby 6-2 6-1.
