Karen Khachanov will be hoping to take a rare scalp over his higher-ranked compatriot Daniil Medvedev when the pair square off in the opening round of the Monte Carlo Masters on Monday.

Normally Medvedev would be the deserved favourite in this matchup - his H2H record of 6-2 is dominant and his game traditionally matches up well. However, Medvedev has been struggling for over a year now and he's hit fresh lows over these first few months of 2025. Throw in a surface switch to clay and Medvedev is tipped for an opening round exit in Monte-Carlo.

Khachanov is a much more natural clay courter and he actually defeated Medvedev at this tournament 12 months ago on his way to the quarter-finals. Great chance for Khachanov to double down and kick off his clay swing with a big scalp.

Head To Head

Medvedev has won six of the eight previous meetings between the pair, including a tight 4-6 7-5 6-3 victory in Doha earlier this year. Khachanov prevailed 6-3 7-5 in their only encounter on clay in Monte Carlo last season.

It's been a challenging last year or so for Medvedev and things haven't got much better to launch 2025, with the former World No. 1 coming into this tournament with a 12-7 record on the season.

Medvedev was slow to get going as he crashed out in the second round of the Australian Open to teenager Learner Tien and the second round in Rotterdam to Mattia Bellucci, while he reached quarter-finals in Doha and Dubai in February.

The former US Open champion appeared as if he was starting to build some momentum with a run to the Indian Wells semi-finals (lost to Holger Rune), but all of that good work was undone with a shock opening exit in Miami to Jaume Munar.

Medvedev has actually played decent tennis in Monte-Carlo in the past given his disdain for clay, with his best result coming in 2019 when he beat Djokovic en route to the semi-finals.

Khachanov has also found the going tough to start the season, arriving in Monte Carlo with a negative 5-7 record.

The former World No. 8 has only won back-to-back matches once in 2025 - and even that was a disappointing tournament, with Khachanov going out to Alex Michelsen in the third round of the Australian Open.

To be fair, Khachanov has been copping tough draws, with his last four defeats coming against top 20 players.

The 28-year-old defeated Nick Kyrgios in his most recent tournament in Miami before going down to Grigor Dimitrov. Khachanov's best result in Monte-Carlo was last year's quarter-final run, where he defeated Medvedev in the previous round.

Daniil Medvedev v Karen Khachanov

I just can't back Medvedev as the favourite on clay in his current form.

Khachanov has struggled to open the season, but he's a much better clay courter and his performances haven't been as bad as his record suggests. Khachanov beat Medvedev at this tournament 12 months ago and lightning can strike twice on Monday.
