In the Monte Carlo Masters, World No. 2 Alexander Zverev takes on Matteo Berrettini in a significant second-round match. Zverev, who has historically thrived in the European clay circuit, aims to improve past performances by making it beyond the third round where he has often faltered. Despite recent struggles post-Australian Open, Zverev is expected to capitalize on Berrettini's less effective clay game. The head-to-head record favors Zverev 4-2, although Berrettini last triumphed on grass in 2023. The match will be streamed live, with betting options available.

Alexander Zverev vs Matteo Berrettini Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

World No. 2 Alexander Zverev begins his bid for a first Monte Carlo Masters title when he comes up against Matteo Berrettini in a blockbuster second round showdown on Tuesday.

Zverev traditionally enjoys plenty of success during the European clay swing, winning the Madrid and Rome Masters on two occasions, while he's also a former runner-up and three-time semi-finalist at Roland Garros. However, the German has never made the final in Monte Carlo in eight previous attempts, bowing out in the third round in three of his last four appearances - can he improve on those showings this week?

Current form says no, but I think this represents a good chance for Zverev to start building some momentum again. Zverev has won four of the six previous meetings with Berrettini, while the Italian isn't as dangerous on clay compared to other surfaces, where his booming serve and forehand are nullified somewhat. Berrettini dropped serve three times (and faced seven break points) in his Monte-Carlo opener against Mariano Navone, which isn't a good sign. It's time for Zverev to step up again after his post-Australian Open sulking period and the start of the clay swing should spur him into action again.

Head To Head

Zverev leads 4-2, but they haven't played since 2023, where Berrettini was triumphant in straight sets at Wimbledon.

Alexander Zverev Form

Zverev comes into this clash with a 14-6 record on the season, with eight of those wins coming in January at the United Cup and Australian Open.

After suffering more Grand Slam heartbreak with his loss to Jannik Sinner in Melbourne, Zverev has struggled for motivation and his best tennis over the last couple of months.

The German has entered five tournaments and failed to win more than two matches at any of them, tasting defeat against several lower-ranked players, including Francisco Comesana and Learner Tien.

Zverev was last seen going down in three sets to Arthur Fils in the R16 of the Miami Masters and will be hoping a switch to clay sparks a reversal of fortunes.

The World No. 2 won 23 of his 29 matches on clay last year, winning the Rome Masters and reaching the Roland Garros final.

Matteo Berrettini Form

Berrettini comes into this contest with a 10-7 record on the season and will be hoping to jump back inside the top 20 over the European summer.

The Italian has struggled with persistent injuries over the last couple of years, but found some form again in Miami in his last tournament, defeating Alex de Minaur on his way to the quarter-finals, where he went down in a tight three-setter to Taylor Fritz.

The former World No. 6 opened his Monte Carlo campaign against Mariano Navone on Monday, prevailing 6-4 6-4.

Berrettini has only been past the second round in Monte Carlo once before, while he hasn't beaten a top five player on clay since the 2019 Rome Masters.

Verdict

I'm backing Zverev to find his feet again on clay and get the job done here.

Berrettini's weapons aren't as effective in these slower conditions, so Zverev is backed to cover a small games line - but it might take the German three sets as he gets adjusted again to European clay.
