De Minaur has got the job done in Washington so far, overcoming a daunting 1-12 record against Stefanos Tsitsipas before taking care of 17-year-old Cruz Hewitt to return to the quarter-finals.

However, the Aussie faces a challenging quarter-final assignment in the form of Nakashima and his recent track record in some key areas doesn't bode well.

First of all, de Minaur has gone 0-4 in his last four matches against top 35 players. He's been down on form for a while now and I'm not sure if I've seen enough this week to declare that de Minaur is back to a level near his best.

And secondly, one of those defeats was against Nakashima in the Queen's Club quarter-finals not so long ago during the grass swing, with the American leading the H2H 2-1 overall.

Nakashima has been playing great tennis this week, easing past Tomas Martin Etcheverry before outlasting Jakub Mensik in three sets. He's gone 3-0 in quarter-finals in 2026 and will fancy himself for the upset again here.

I can't take de Minaur as the favourite at the moment. As mentioned, I'm going to need to see more. Nakashima can push this Over 22.5 games and he looks good with a +2.5 start. Smaller stake on the American prevailing in three.

Despite rising to a career-high ranking of World No. 5, de Minaur has endured a difficult campaign and has spoken candidly about struggling with both his confidence and motivation after a series of disappointing defeats.

The Australian's Grand Slam frustrations continued at Wimbledon, where his hopes of a deep run were ended by Flavio Cobolli in the fourth round. Earlier in the season, he also exited Roland Garros in the third round after a loss to Jakub Mensik.

His grass-court swing produced mixed results. De Minaur finished runner-up in 's-Hertogenbosch after falling to Kamil Majchrzak in the final before suffering a quarter-final defeat to Nakashima at Queen's Club.

Washington presented another daunting challenge, with de Minaur drawn against Stefanos Tsitsipas in the opening round. Having lost 12 of their previous 13 meetings, the Australian produced a gritty performance to prevail 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 before ending the run of 17-year-old qualifier Cruz Hewitt with a routine 6-2 6-3 win in the second round.

The victory improved his ATP 500 record to an outstanding 61-21 since the start of the 2023 season.

It's been a fairly consistent season from Nakashima and as such, he comes into this contest hovering around the cusp of the top 30 and close to his career-high ranking.

Nakashima made the final of Brisbane to start the year and also reached the semi-finals of Acapulco.

The American continued his steady form to make the third round of Roland Garros and played well to beat de Minaur on his way to the semi-finals of Queens - although he would have been disappointed to lose in the second round of Wimbledon to Jan-Lennard Struff in a fifth-set tiebreak.

Nakashima returned to hardcourts in Washington this week and he's impressed in reaching the quarter-finals, beating Tomas Martin Etcheverry in straight sets before a great 7-6 3-6 6-4 victory over Jakub Mensik.

The 24-year-old will now look to improve a poor 3-20 record vs top 10 opponents, but one of those wins was of course over de Minaur recently.
