It's edging towards panic stations for Melbourne City as the embattled reigning premiers go on the road to face Sydney FC in the A-League on Tuesday night at Allianz Stadium.

City were knocked out of the Asian Champions League on penalties by Buriram United last week, ending their continental journey and seeing this A-League game pushed back to Tuesday. Aurelio Vidmar is under immense pressure from frustrated City fans, with their club slipping to ninth on the ladder, while their form across the last 15 games is the worst in the competition, winning just three times.

Sydney aren't setting the world on fire and have another level to find, but they did well to earn a point with Melbourne Victory last week, with summer transfer additions Apostolos Stamatelopoulos and Ahmet Arslan both finding the back of the net. The Sky Blues are still within striking distance of a top two finish, but the minor premiership may be out of the question as they trail Newcastle by seven points.

I'm backing both teams to score in a match that City simply must win. However, the defending champions are supremely down on confidence and I have no reason to back them on the road here. Sydney looked solid against Victory and German playmaker Arslan was heavily involved with six shots - I'll take the attacking midfielder to score again.

Sydney have been nestled in third spot on the ladder for what feels like an eternity, coming into this clash four games unbeaten and with a 10-3-7 record.

After back-to-back 1-0 wins over bottom six sides Wellington and Brisbane, the Sky Blues settled for a 2-2 draw with Melbourne Victory in last week's Big Blue.

It was a solid point for the Sky Blues as they recovered from a two-goal deficit, with Arslan and Stamatelopoulos both opening their accounts for their new club.

"Overall, to come back from 2–0 down against a good side like Victory and walk away with a point is positive in that sense," Sydney manager Ufuk Talay said post-match.

Melbourne City Form Analysis

It's been a dismal last few months for City as they head into this encounter languishing in ninth spot on the ladder, four points adrift of the top six.

City's only saving grace was their run in the Champions League, but that also came to a heartbreaking end mid-week as they were eliminated on penalties by Buriram United despite the Thai side being reduced to 10 men for the majority of the contest.

Aurelio Vidmar's side have the worst form out of any side in the A-League across the last 15 games, winning just three times. Their last victory came on January 16, while their last two domestic results were 3-1 and 3-0 defeats to Melbourne Victory and Auckland respectively.
