Newcastle Jets face Melbourne Victory in an exciting Round 2 A-League matchup at McDonald Jones Stadium. Both teams are eager for their first season win, following Newcastle's narrow 3-2 loss and Melbourne's scoreless draw in their season openers. Newcastle displayed promising form in the Australia Cup, yet let victory slip against Central Coast Mariners. Melbourne is adjusting to off-season changes and aims to enhance their attacking dynamics. Favoring Newcastle's recent form, experts suggest backing them in the Double Chance market for this encounter. Team announcements are pending.

Victory were held to a 0-0 stalemate against Auckland FC last week, while the Jets squandered a huge chance to claim early F3 bragging rights against the Mariners, missing a penalty before conceding a late goal to fall 3-2 in Gosford. Newcastle are coming off a brilliant Australia Cup victory, but lost momentum with that late capitulation, while Victory have made lots of changes over the offseason and are still searching for their groove.

The Jets have only lost once to Victory across the last six meetings in all competitions and despite that loss to Central Coast, have an impressive young side who have been punching above their weight lately. Victory should have conceded on multiple occasions against Auckland and were fortunate to come away with a point. I'll back the Jets in the Double Chance market, with a smaller stake on Newcastle to come away with all three points.

Head To Head

Newcastle went unbeaten against Victory across their three meetings last season, drawing two and coming away with a crushing 3-0 triumph in Round 18, with Kosta Grozos, Lachie Rose and Clayton Taylor getting on the scoresheet.

Newcastle Jets Form

It was a nightmare start to the season for the Jets after they stumbled late to lose 3-2 against rivals Central Coast in Gosford.

Newcastle were the superior side all contest and went ahead through a brilliant strike from outside the box by youngster Alex Baldato. However, the Jets conceded two goals in as many minutes - one via the penalty spot - to fall behind 2-1 at half-time.

Lachie Rose and Eli Adams made a difference from the bench, combining for the second goal scored by Rose - but Adams missed a penalty in the 97th minute before the Mariners immediately went up the other end to steal a late 3-2 victory.

It had been a successful preseason for the Jets after they claimed their first piece of silverware since the 2008 Grand Final, beating Heidelberg United 3-1 in the Australia Cup final.

Melbourne Victory Form

Victory opened their account for the season with a 0-0 stalemate against minor premiers Auckland FC at AAMI Park last week.

With a vastly different looking lineup to the side that made the Grand Final last season, Victory only managed two shots on target and looked like a team still forming combinations.

It remains to be seen if Nikola Vergos has what it takes to lead the line up front for Victory after the Greek striker was kept quiet last week. Denis Genreau provided some promising moments in attack in his return to the A-League.

Victory didn't have much of a preseason to gel, losing their Australia Cup opener against Olympic Kingsway.

Verdict

Tough to call, like most early season A-League games.

The Jets were impressive in the Australia Cup and were by far the better team last week - they just blew it at the end. Victory's defence held firm, but didn't offer much in attack. I'll take a punt on Newcastle at home.
