Newcastle hosts a seven-race program on Tuesday, with a mix of maiden, Class 1 and benchmark races across the afternoon.

There are several lightly raced runners with upside on the card, while a few more established gallopers also find suitable setups in the later races.

Newcastle Tips October 6

NZB 4YO&UP Maiden Handicap Tips (Race 2)

Newcastle Next Best Bet - Race 2 No. 1 Samaka

Consistency has been the theme through Samaka’s short career, with the Peter Snowden-trained gelding finishing in the placings in all three starts to date.

The son of Zoustar began with a runner-up finish over 1300m at Canberra before backing that up with a close third over 1250m at Newcastle on a Soft 5, where he was beaten less than a length.

He then stepped into metropolitan maiden company at Warwick Farm in June and again ran well, finishing third over 1100m, with the quinella from that event now both dual metropolitan winners.

A Rosehill trial on September 8 should have brought him on nicely for his return, while the move back to 1250m looks suitable given the strength of his previous Newcastle effort.

Chad Schofield takes the ride from barrier two and, with race experience, proven soft-ground form and a favourable draw, Samaka gets a very good opportunity to break through first-up.

Newcastle Best Bet - Race 5 No. 4 Slander

Slander looks the horse with the most upside on the Newcastle card, with the Nathan Doyle-trained three-year-old returning this campaign with a strong provincial maiden win at Illawarra Grange on September 17.

That victory came over 1150m when she raced on speed, absorbed pressure and still found enough late to hold off Areesea, stopping the clock in a sharp 1:06.97 after finishing runner-up on debut at Hawkesbury during her first preparation.

The Hawkesbury debut also came on a Soft 7, where she was narrowly beaten after leading, so any further rain at Newcastle should not pose a concern.

Ashley Morgan has partnered her in both career starts and stays aboard from barrier four, which should allow him to put her into another prominent position without doing unnecessary work.

The rise to 1250m looks a natural progression, and with only two starts behind her compared with a number of more exposed Class 1 rivals, Slander appears capable of taking another sizeable step forward.

Newcastle Value Bet - Race 7 No. 14 Chestime

A return to the Newcastle area makes Chestime an interesting value runner in the finale, with the Lou Mary-trained mare bringing consistent recent form into the race.

She resumed with a strong victory over 1250m on a Soft 6 at Taree on August 31, coming from worse than midfield to score comfortably before stepping into BM66 company at Narromine.

That latest effort was another good one, finishing third over 1300m after settling eighth and ninth through the middle stages, where the mare was forced to sustain a long and wide run.

She has previously raced well around the Beaumont Newcastle circuit, while her broader profile suggests she is most effective when able to settle off the speed and build into her work.

The rise to 1500m is the slight query given she has only raced once at the distance, but she drops to 56kg, draws barrier five and gets Chad Schofield, giving her every chance to settle economically and finish strongly at a more attractive price.
