Mornington Next Best Bet - Race 4 No. 2 Fortune Link

Fortune Link showed promise in three outings last season, with two of those efforts coming in metro company at Moonee Valley.

He was only beaten narrowly on debut at the Valley in November when runner-up in a 1200m maiden before being slightly disappointing at Geelong later that month.

The gelding bounced back with a solid fourth back at Moonee Valley over 1200m, and all three of those starts came on good ground.

That form has held up well, and with slightly softer going forecast he should have no issue adapting to conditions here.

He has also been prepared with three Cranbourne jump outs ahead of his return and dropping to country level, he looks well placed to breakthrough.

Mornington Best Bet - Race 5 No. 2 Xtra Rush

Xtra Rush is a late starter to racing, but he has made an immediate impact with two wins from as many starts.

The son of Xtravagant made a strong debut on a soft 7 at Cranbourne when racing just off the speed before putting a big margin on his rivals in the straight.

He proved that was no fluke when stepping up to 1700m at Sale on a good 4 surface, where he again settled close to the pace and proved too strong late.

That win came in a Benchmark 64, and the form has stacked up with several subsequent winners coming through the race.

Now drawn to get a much softer run from an inside alley, he looks well placed to maintain his unbeaten record.

Craft Markets Australian 50 Years Handicap Tips (Race 6)

Mornington Roughie - Race 6 No. 7 Big Kate

Big Kate has been holding her form well, with two top four finishes from her last three outings.

Both of those came on the Pakenham synthetic, including a narrow defeat last month when stepping up to 1600m at Benchmark 58 level.

Her prior run at Bairnsdale can be forgiven after drawing wide in the wet, and she has shown she can handle rain-affected ground in the past.

The daughter of Tosen Stardom has a strong record at this distance, winning three of six attempts at the mile.

She also won her only previous start at Mornington, and from a kinder draw this time she looks a value chance to surprise.

Russell V Cleland Handicap Tips (Race 8)

Mornington Value Bet - Race 8 No. 2 Bossy Star

Bossy Star has been consistent this prep, finishing in the top three in all five starts.

He broke through at Sale in June on soft ground before following up with two close-up third placings, including a narrow defeat at Geelong in July.

The gelding returned to the winner’s stall last month at Geelong when stepping up to 1200m, scoring by half-a-length in Benchmark 62 company.

That form has stacked up strongly, with multiple winners emerging from the race to frank the performance.

Although he rises in the weights, an inside draw helps and he looks good value to go back-to-back for the Matt Laurie stable.
